• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

hi guys
my mic is a Astatic 575-m6 and it's getting old... maybe I should get a new one... I see some that look nice on Amazon for 30 or 40 bucks..... I punched up mine to see if I they still make it and I see them on E-bay for $350 to $400 ???? I know you can ask anything doesn't mean they will sell for that.. but????? why so much??? I would love to get a Anytone 5555NII that sells for $260 bucks on Amazon... if I can really sell it for $260 and buy the 5555 N II ..and the Anytone comes with with a mic!!!! so I wouldn't even need mine.... but before I let something go.. WHY is my old mic better than all the new mics??? and if I want to get a 4 pin mic for my President Grant export what would you suggest??

People put up a lot of vintage stuff for sale for ridicules prices and unless its an actual collectors item with a history of high prices you would be a fool to pay it. I see a lot of this on eBay where the overpriced ad is still running after a couple of years because nobody is stupid enough to buy it.

With that said I sort of remember your mic being a good one in its day, very loud and punchy.

well if I can get $260 bucks for my Mic and buy a Anytone 5555NII then my mic's going up on ebay!!!!.... but I will need to replace it... what's a good 4 pin mic??? ... ultimately I think I may sell my Cobra 148 GTL and my President Grant export... then buy two Anytone 5555 N II so I have the same set up in both home and mobile... I think I could get enough for two Anytones if I sell my two radio's and mic... eventually
... right now I want to play with what I got.... so what's a really good Mic????

Doesn't look like many have sold for the prices you saw on active listings, but they aren't doing that bad on the ones that have sold.

Sell it. The radios where it sounds best are now going obsolete. Poor ears don’t make up for audio quality solutions.

Use the cash to underwrite an Anytone AT5555-N2 and add the electret Uniden BC-645 mic as it’s the only one sounds better than the stock mic (needs FJ-45 adapter).

You’ll have a rig that’ll hear and get heard with plenty of compliments given TX NRC. (This is what I’m using in the big truck at present with feedpoint choke, etc).

The radio/mic pair pretty much defines state-of-the-art AM/SSB mobile given right antenna system (see LARSEN NMO34b + W640 whip discussed).

Full effort with antenna system is what matters most

$500 covers radio, mic, antenna plus custom power and Driver Extreme DX-901 external speaker (with room for minor miscellaneous).

Say goodbye to 1987 and enjoy the 21st Century.

I am really giving a Lot of thought.... I just can't believe anyone will pay such money for old stuff when they can have a new Quad 5
My President Grant export AM FM SSB 120 CHANNELS 15 WATTS AM 25 WATTS SSB is pretty rare .. I think I could get 300 for it... The Cobra 148 GTL is the nicest one I've ever seen ( I've never used it) so the orange lines are still on the knobs... I should get 200 for that ... The mic looks like I could get over that I also have to Texas Star amps never used 50/75 amps plus recurving amp if I got a 100 each that's 900 bucks.. and I could replace both radios with the Quad 5s and no longer need the amps.... But I hate to let it go and find out there is a reason that stuff is worth more than the Quad 5 Chinese radios... But my gear takes up a lot of room .... Be nice not to have amp and swr meter all bunches up together.... The receiving amp REALLY pulls in distant stations... Not sures the Quad 5 would receive as well as that amp

Alright, to repeat based on a famous radio:

“ . . The Cobra 148 GTL is the nicest one I've ever seen”.

The 2023-version of a 148 in performance expectations:

IMG_3010.jpeg

I removed $700 worth of gear with this purchase: $260 radio & $50 extension speaker.

A marriage made in heaven.

You won’t want or need a RX pre-amp given long (and tall total height) permanent-mount antenna.

The radio gear used at home is fun.
The radio gear used in mobile is critical.

I have one that I use with a Magnum S-9.
I have used it for years, and have always gotten good reports on its clarity and sound.

Mine also works great ... But if I can sell it for $250 bucks????? I'll sell it and use the stock mic... Actually I'm going to sell my rare cb and that mic for $500 if I can "really" get it .... I all ready bought another Quad 5 to replace it for $260 bucks . So I should come out of it with a new CB with more features and power and put $250 bucks in my pocket... I don't know why people want the old classics that are not as good as the new radios.

I can believe that they sound "good"... maybe even "great". But I think that "looking backwards through time" has a way of adding myth and mystique to things.

A similar situation exists in guitar playing/music. Players now have caused incredible price jumps on old OLD vintage equipment.... chasing a player's sound and thinking ...."if I had THIS and THIS and THAT I would sound just like HIM".

In answer to that... David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) said "rubbish". He said that he could go into any music store... pull down a decent guitar from the rack, go to the counter and pick two or three pedals out of the newer ones, walk over to a tube amp.... and as he says "give me a few minutes... and I will sound JUST LIKE ME!".
