I always thought you were supposed to get the Ham licence first and buy the radio second? I'm going to start studying for mine so I can get into transmitting, if i'm doing this backwards please let me know.

As long as you don't Transmit their is no issue having a radio before you get your ticket. Always good to listen in and see how things work in your area. I got my radio 2 weeks before I took my test and got familier with the radio and listening to the local hams chat. Then when I got my ticket I was ready to go!! :)

Nice radios by the way, simple shack but it seems to do the job!! :)

Ditto for getting the ham rig first!!! If you make the investment, then there is more impetus to pass the exam. I did this YEARS AGO when my folks bought me a monster transmitter for Christmas. It sat there only heating up my bedroom, so I passed the test so I could throw the transmit switch.

Believe me hams like it when new guys come on the repeater and have the MO down...

Yeah, getting the radio first is good incentive to pass. You picked a good one to start with. I'm thinking of getting one of those Vertex's you have as a backup. I like the large display.
