I live on the lower east side of Manhattan and I have to keep my collection small.
So I have the following :

Motorola XTS2500 450-512 for nypd, fdny, ems.

M/A Com P7100ip 450-512 for hiking upstate

Kenwood TK380 440-512mhz, this was my first NYC radio to monitor nypd, etc.

My newest addition -

Whistler TRX-1 for all DMR and trunking.

I am getting rid of all the portables in favor of a Motorola XTS5000 UHF 450-512mhz.

It's a small collection but works for me! I've heard calls out of this world on the 25/28/32 precinct!

All my radios are RX only.

If you are selling your XTS2500, message me. I may be interested for the right price. Also just curious as to why your selling it for a 5000? The 2500 is newer than the 5000. Only real difference is the housing.

The XTS2500 and 5000 were released at the same time. The 2500 is a smaller radio, with it’s own battery, where as the 5000 shares the same better with the XTS3000 series

The XTS2500 is 4mb of on board memory, where as the 5000 has 8mb. The 2500 maxes out at 255 channels, the 5000 is capable of 512 channels. The 5000 is backward compatible with both APCO 25 and APCO 16 systems, unlike the 2500. Unlike the 2500, the 5000 can front panel program a frequency, along with NAC/PL/DPL, without the CPS.

The 2500 can be backwards compatable with the right flash options. And they also have 8meg 2500s which are much more recent

I like the 5000 for size and durability, that is why I'm selling everything other than my TRX to get the one 5000.
I'd love a model II as I can do my own programming from my PC.

The 2500 is also a known issue with the antenna, volume pot and channel knob pot coming un soldered or breaking. While I have fixed some with those issues I'd prefer a 5000 over them.

Crack them open and you will see many differences in the 2500 compared to the 5000. The 5000 is down right more rugged and that's for starters.

I was wondering about the antenna on the 2500 as well. It looks identical to the 800 stubby on my 5000. Just curious how it was made for UHF? With the molded ball on the top you can't cut those down without pulling everything out of the bottom it would seem. Unless it's an eBay special as suggested before, and even then I'd be worried about using it and chancing damage to my radio.

Sorry for the late response, here are a few pics of the antenna. I think it came from North Carolina. I can't remember. But I RX only and never had a problem in NYC.

The 5000 is no longer supported by Motorola. The end of life for the 2500 was in 2015, so parts and service can still be had until 2019. The volume/channel/SMA on the 2500 is the weak spot, but they can be fixed. I fix them daily.

The 2500 tops out at 870 channels and the 5000 at 1000 channels.
They both support FPP as well as a lot of other functions.
BN revisions of the 2500 are 8MB.

When I first started working on the 2500, I hated them and preferred the 5000. But as time has gone on, I have grown to like the 2500 better. The SMA/vol/chan problem is not that bad and is user abuse most of the time.

On the antenna, we've seen a bunch of antennas for all sorts of bands/manufacturers come into our shop. I don't know where they come from. I guess users buy their own for whatever reason. I destroy every single one that comes in that is either not the OEM UHF antenna that we supply or if the OEM is damaged.
