I would also suggest joining the PSR-500 Yahoo group. People are uploading their files for various areas and there is a PA file available.

Simply plugging in the cable is not enough. The scanner came with a CD. That CD contains the appropriate driver that you'll need. Install the drive per the instructions. Then make note of the # of the new COM port that is installed, because you'll then need to go into the application that you use (such as Win500 or PSREdit or something else) and specify that COM port.

Actually, my laptop with Vista did not require installation of the driver from the CDROM. It found the USB device and installed without it.

Check the "Device Manager" for the correct port. I believe it defaults to port 5

great.. i just received it today, however, i cannot get the usb cable to work at all.
i tried different ports, but no luck.

Read post #5 again. It's not just ports you have to install the driver from the CD.
IIRC you need to load the CD in your computer then plug in the cable when windows
says it found new hardware (the cable) and asks to install it you need to point windows to the driver on the CD. If windows is allowed to install it's own driver for the cable it will not work.

does anyone have the files for allegheny county pa?

The RRDB (RadioReference DataBase) has pretty much everything you'd need... and more.

http://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?ctid=2242

If you decide to program in some trunked systems, understand that you will not get the Pennsylvania STARnet. That is OpenSky Standard and not monitorable by any scanner.

But certainly there are tons of trunked systems and conventional frequencies for Allegheny County. You can find them at the URL above.

If you get serious about entering a bunch of trunked systems, you might want to consider paying the $30/yr subscription to become a Premium Subscriber here at RadioReference. Most people feel it is well worth the $30/yr to be able to use PSREdit / Win500 / etc to import the frequencies right in rather than having to do it manually.

If you think you might be interested in becoming a Premium Subscriber, read this:

http://www.radioreference.com/apps/subscription/

NOTE: Everybody has access to the RRDB. You do not have to be a Premium Subscriber in order to access the DataBase. However, it sure makes life a lot simpler.
