Yeah, so here's what I'm working with while on the go, looks kinda like my room- but for a reason, and FYI, they're not the same radios, I've become a bit of a spectra addict.

1) On the car, I've got an 800Mhz Moto antenna, on a trunk-lip mount, and up top is my fairly aged Moto mag-mount w/VHF whip.

2) Inside the trunk, the my formerly Motorocycle Spectra, now remote mounted in the trunk, but the cable is a little short and can't be routed too well into the passenger compartment, so that's one thing I'm fixing to change. Motorcycle Spectra remote-heads use a 7' cable. One of the wires visible in the trunk goes to the CD player, but clearly adds to what probably looks like a mess.

3) Inside the car, is my VHF Spectra (dash-mount) on a locking bracket, and the remote head from the spectra 800 in the trunk. The speaker for the VHF radio is right there on the hand-brake, but it's odd location doesn't at all inhibit use of the parking brake. The 800 speaker, is out of view mounted on the backside of the transmission linkage hump, in the back-seat. Also, when I drive, especially around home, I put my XTS3K on the downriver system in the "change holder"- or whatever it is, which is also in the center console. It fits snug and at an angle that the speaker faces up, it works well.

Now, the radios are wired directly to the battery via fuse box- and the system works great as-is, but the 800Mhz spectra screen is difficult to see because the shifter gets in the field of view, so I am looking to do some changing, and here's what I have in mind...

Putting a real remote-head cable on the trunk spectra, with the added length of cable, I can put it somewhere else in the car- location undetermined. Then remounting the VHF spectra under the passenger seat, and remote mounting the head using either the motorcycle cable (shorter run for head mounting) or, getting a regular cable (these are 17 footers) and running an A9 head, I'd actually like to put an A9 on both- I received two A9 heads in the mail yesterday, and a 17' control cable- but head mounting locations are rather hard to find.

I've taken a great liking to the A9 control head because it allows for an 11 character display (rather than just 8) and can handle a lot more programmable features. I found out that you can even program a button (on trunking radios) so that you can see the system time, which is pretty cool IMO- even though trunker can decode that too, but around here, the time is seldom accurate.

Oh well, enjoy. Some tips from fellow escort owners who value the leg-room of their passengers, are welcome to give me some advice on where to put the heads, I'm fairly set on having on A9 and one A7 in the car, the A7 for the 800Mhz spectra, and A9 on the VHF....

Screw the passengers...as long as your radios are comfortable...that's all that's important!!

Set up looks good...not much else you can do in an Escort. I used to have one and had my stuff mounted the same way.

Yeah, not a whole lot of options when you have the shifter on the floorboard like that. I have a BC-780XLT mounted almost identicle to how you have your radios mounted. Believe me, my next vehicle will have the shifter on the steering column.

I recently moved my Yaesu remote head to above the rear view mirror. I just bought one of those suction cup things at radio shack meant to hold a radar detector and a little bit of velcow and it seems to work really well. I have it mounted way up at the top of the window, touching the headliner practically. That way it is also out of sight of any potential theives.

That's quite an "adult" vanity plate you've got there... ;)

LOL, I doctored my plate to hide it just in case- not like I haven't already given enough information on my whearabouts as it is though.

I can say that it's definitly not a vanity plate, but it might be a good one to get if it were, lol.

So, I venture to guess that the use of the Spectra's in your way to get around the Michigan law of having a permit to use a scanner in your car?

I think the law on that has changed, but I'm not sure. I have the scanner permit, but a few years back I just went and got my ham license and it's covered under that.

I used to just have a single GM300 in there, mounted with the VHF spectra is, until I started getting into spectras... I require an alpha display on my radios now and the spectra fits the bill... cheap!

(1) Any person who shall equip a vehicle with a radio receiving set that will receive signals sent on frequencies assigned by the federal communications commission of the United States of America for police purposes

This covers ANY radio capable of receiving police frequencies, even the spectra's.

I am a licensed amateur radio operator, but also applied and received the scanner permit just to be safe. The last thing you want to do is argue with a police officer on the side of the road about the scanner law (having your amateur license). With the permit, there should be no argument.

Josh has both, so he is good.

Having that ham license does not give him permision to have a 800mhz radio programmed to police frequencies(even if only RX ) last time i checked .... Now if one of those are vhf and programmed for ham and any public safety is RX only not a big deal, and of course I doubt a cop is gonna hasle you about it anyway

If I put that radio in my truck like that it would be dead. lol. Water always leaks in right there. Aren't you worried about that at all? I would of mounted it on the side or something. Glad you have a dry trunk though. : )

How about mounting it over on the passenger side, where their right foot would be? Has worked well for me and I can hear the audio well.

Other than that, nice setup! Hard to do an install with limited space like that.

Well, two things. For one, the installation has changed a bit, but I'm not done tinkering yet. Both radios are not remote-head, it's just finding a good location to put the heads that neither inhibits the view nor gets in the way of my driving.

Again, you'd be surprised... even people who ride in my car ask me how I operate the parking brake, it's really not even an issue. I use it all the time, especially in the snow to fish-tail around turns, as well as keep my car from rolling at all when I do work on it or, of course, park on a hill.
