Yaesu VX-170 & VX-177

I love my Yaesu VX-170 (VHF) & VX-177 (UHF)! I had them a while ago, traded them off, then bought brand new ones because I was so happy with them. If you have the programming software (or not), they are very easy to program, have great sounding transmit & receive audio, and pack a full five watts! Plus the price is nice, too!

With all the Motorola's HT's I have in my collection, the Yaesu VX-170 & VX-177 are still among my top ten favorite hand-helds! Plus they're waterproof (but I wouldn't take 'em scuba diving)!

Not bad radios at all. I've had both myself (from Will, actually!) and they're excellent. They are on par with the HYT demos I received this week.

I've been considering getting after market antennas for the HT's but they seem not to need it. The receive is great and I can be heard for at least 30 miles on simplex on the full 5 watts. I just got a card from a ham inSpringfield whom I had a simplex QSO with while on the state fair grounds.

He was on the other end of Sangamon county from the fair grounds and said I was full quieting, as did the others in the conversation with the exception of one who was a county and a half away who could hear me but just barely and he was mobile. Once he was on the base at his home, I got a report of around just under 5. All in all, not bad.

The company I used to work for was considering HYT radios as another product line. They are the only "Chinese" radios that are currently "Certified (formerly known as Type Accepted by the FCC)." They are very high-quality, and are extremely reasonable in price. Any American dealer who carries this line will have a great entry-level line of imported radios that are now Certified by the FCC.

They look like a combination of Motorola & Vertex. I'll have to check them out.

Thanks! They're all great radios that are great fun on a regular basis. I'm looking at maybe getting the Icom Satellite radio 2m/40cm some day down the road and I can use the 8900R as a mobile when I get a car. I still need to go digital (D-Star) and get a 220 rig for a base. Alinco makes those and they are rather inexpensive.

I'm gonna hold off on anymore base installs though because we are looking at relocating to a better place that we've been dreaming of. We may end up renting instead of buying, but buying is something we want to do right the first time instead of learning the hard way if we can help it.

I have a VX-170 myself and love it, I wish they made a dual-band version, but there really isn't anything comparable. :(

I ended up getting a VX-6R, which is a nice radio but I like the rugged look of the VX-170.

I have the Yaesu FT-60R, which is about as close as a dual-band equivalent of both the VX-170 & VX-177. I don't believe that the FT-60R is waterproof, however, all the accessories from the VX-170 & VX-177 are interchangeable with the FT-60R. Plus the price is very reasonable! You'll find it under $200 from most ham radio retailers.

Those look identical to Relm/BK.

I had both the VHF and UHF models of the 3600+ but dumped both of them. WAY too quirky and dificult to get to work properly.

I have the FT-60R as well. A great little radio.

I like the VX-170 and 177 as well. I had a 170 but sold it to get the dual band 60R, i liked the 60R so much that i sold my VX-7R. So i have experience with all of them!

We have been an HYT Dealer for a year now.HYT actually makes the Relm RP3600/RP7500/RP6100/RP9500
for thier North American market.
It was kinda weird seeing the same EXACT HYT radios being called something else by Relm Wireless.
HYT also makes the RELM RM800 mobiles.
The Blackbox radio you see in VHF /UHF on some dealer sites is basically an HYT TC500 radio that was branded for an American company.

We have been selling quite a bit of HYT and the downtime and repair returns are actually better than some other brands we sell. No hassle software and cables to program makes it easier for some folks too.
The TC780 aka Relm RP7500 actually has a built in vibrate function,so with a stubby antenna it makes a nice alternative to carrying a portable and pager on duty.It will vibrate for 2 tone/5 tone or DTMF calls if programmed to do so.
