Hi all,

I am new to the group, I am looking for someone who owns a new Pro-97 to help me program NMB, MB and the palmetto 800 trunks for Horry county into the radio.

I have no motorola trunking systems in my home area to even practice setting up talk groups or control channels. I am not currently in MB but travel there extensivly during the year and would like to take my new radio with me.

As you might say, I need spoon fed this information, if someone is willing to help.

Please e-mail: wmbio@hotmail.com

Thanks,
Huffy

Have you downloaded win97 to program it? It's makes it a lot easier.

I'm working on a 93 file, but I'm not sure if there is a way to change it to the 97 format.

I'll check in tonight from work to update.

For the Motorola analog trunked systems, all you will need are the control channels programmed into memory
(there are usually 4 of them), the 97 will find the voice frequencies for you and display the talkgroups (without alpha tags unless you program them). Just be sure you have the frequency and Trunked id (F + the Trunk button) set to MO for Motorola.

Use the information from the Radioreference database when programming the 97 by hand or with win97.
Keep in mind you can try Win97 for 30 days, but you will need to get the 20-289 or black bag cable to use the software to upload to the PRO-97.

http://starrsoft.com/software/win97/default.asp

Also if yo are a donating member to Radioreference, you can import the frequency and trunked information directly into Win97.

Sorry, I do not have any software or patch cables to work with. As I said I do not have any Motorola trunking in my area to test with. I am trying to understand so be patient with me please.

Are you saying all I need to do is identify the trunk control channels, program only the control channels and set them for MO, and they will do the rest?

I do not need to program each active trunk channel in the group?

Actually, you don't need to know which of the licensed frequencies are control channels.

As long as you are in the vicinity of the target trunked system, you can simply enter all the licensed frequencies, and the scanner will search for the control frequency in use.

Without entering any talkgroups, you can "search" the system to listen and identify talkgroups.

With regards to Motorola 800 MHz trunked systems close to you (Cumberland / Allegany Co., Md), have you check the Airinc system near the airport in Wiley Ford, and the Allegany County system in Midland ?

Jeff,

The trunks you mention are LTR ( Johnson ) and I have these sucessfully installed in my Pro-97, our local sheriff and fire depts use these. Not sure what the airinc system is? Do you have the freqs? I will listen.

OK, for the pro-97 trunking in Myrtle beach, install all known freq. in the trunk group, set to MO, lock out the user ID's I do not wish to listen too for Horry county. Am I on the right track?

Does each trunk need to be in a seperate bank?, like I have to do with the LTR systems?

Thanks

That should have read "Aeronautical Radio, " which is a company that handles the tracking of aircraft, cargo and personnel through software and radio networks spanning the globe.

They have used five-channel 800-MHz Motorola Type I trunked systems at many airports, in support of local operations. Some of those systems have been replaced with Nextel equipment setup specifically for the use of the airport personnel.

The airport at Wiley Ford is licensed for trunking on 858.7875, 858.8125, 858.8875, 859.7875 and 859.8875. The current license covers use of both analog and digital (Nextel) transmissions. Your best bet is to listen to the frequencies for a typical Motorola control channel.

>>> Does each trunk need to be in a seperate bank?, like I have to do with the LTR systems?

Yes ... I don't know if the Pro 97 will trunktrack multiple control frequencies in the same bank, but the talkgroup I-Ds will be different for each system ... so use a separate bank for each.

You can also enter in conventional channels with the trunked systems. For instance, include Myrtle Beach's conventional fire frequencies in the same bank as their trunked system. And the police conventional tac channel.

> OK, for the pro-97 trunking in Myrtle beach, install all known freq. in the trunk group, set to MO, ...

Set both the bank and the individual trunked frequencies to Motorola trunking.

>> ... lock out the user ID's I do not wish to listen too for Horry county. Am I on the right track?

Yes. I would go ahead and enter the talkgroups that interest you in the scan lists. In "open" mode, any of those talkgroups will display with the alpha you entered, so you'll be able to tell if you're hearing a talkgroup already identified on Radio Reference (or whatever source you use).

Having the key talkgroups entered beforehand will also enable you to concentrate on them if something significant occurs while you're monitoring.

Jeff,

Nextel is everywhere! Noisey as H*** all over the 800 band.
Let me take a listen to the airport freq's.

I have done as you suggested, each bank in the 97 holds the trunk freq's and talk groups, I have 5 banks programmed tonight.
I do have mutiple control channels in the Horry trunk, may have to seperate these into individule banks with the same talk groups but will wait till I get to MB before I do that, I do not know if the 97 can handle several control channels in the same bank....Anyone????

NMB trunk and talk groups
The Huge Horry trunk, 15-20 freq, and talk groups
The new MB public safety trunk and talk groups ( Fire & PD came off the Horry trunk per notes here at RR )
Surfside trunk and talk groups
Palmetto 800, Conway and NMB with talk groups

"You can also enter in conventional channels with the trunked systems. For instance, include Myrtle Beach's conventional fire frequencies in the same bank as their trunked system. And the police conventional tac channel."

Conventional fire & Police tac channels? Can you Identify for me, not seeing these in the look up lists. Where would you add these if you were programming?

So far so good on this end, thank you for your time!

Multiple control channels that are part of the same site / system are "fine." The site controller may rotate between them, so only one of the control channels will actually be in use at any moment in time.

Assuming the Pro 97 can track more than one "active" control channel in the same bank, the problem occurs when the active control channels represent two different systems. Talkgroup xxxxx may have one use on system 1, and another use on system 2 ... but you can only program one scan list per bank.

If the Pro 97 cannot track more than one active control channel per bank, then it will lock onto the first active control channel it finds, and ignore the others until it loses that control channel signal.

Look at the frequencies here:
http://radioreference.com/modules.php?name=RR&ctid=2338

The fire departments and EMS still maintain a simulcast of dispatch on VHF, for paging purposes. Some of the other frequencies may be active for interoperability with neighboring agencies. A couple of the fire VHF assignments are relatively new ... not left over from the pre-trunking days.

Jeff,

Not a paid member of this site yet, so your link doesn't work for me, can you C&P the freq. info please.

The large Horry county trunk freq's and control channels are listed here at RR as being in the same trunk group from my reading, just a very large group with several different control channels.

So far no traffic or control channels found on the airport freqs, I will continue to monitor.

thanks

I'll paste to the end of this message, but you don't have to be a paid RR member to assess the database ... you just need to be a registered member.

From the rr home page ... www.radioreference.com ... click on the RR database link at the top of the page, then choose the state, then choose the county.

It's likely not operational, then. If it was a Motorola trunked site, and within range, the control channel would be making its familiar "rat-tat-tat" 24 / 7.

What I would program 1st, is.........

154.400
155.295
155.400
154.220

at a mimuim. Depending on where you will be. I don't monitor Conway or Surfside as I don't go there whem I'm around.

154.400 County Fire Dispatch. Some traffic will be on the 800 TG, but this will let you know who is going ehere. If you're near the north end of Horry Co, you may get Brunswick Co. bleeding over from 154.415.

155.295 When I left in 99, they were using VHF mobiles and mostly 800 HTs. for EMS work.

155.400 With 800 TGs I'm not sure how much they will use this as a EMS TA ch. From another post (and the Horry Co website) It is a combined Fire/EMS dEpt now.

154.220. If you're in MB, this is handy. BTW, the input (153.830) is (was) the same input for Brunswick Counties 154.415 repeater. As a Firefighter in the sounth end of Brunswick Co, I'd monitor the repeater input as well so I could hear the local units when we could not make the repeater.
