• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

The way sdr is going this isn't to much of a stretch. The filtering and amp would be the most expensive part. I'm surprised nobody has made one based on a beagle or Android phone platform or something like that with waveforms you purchase like apps/widgets.

Please let it be P25, UHF Trunking ... WITH ... a flashlight. No improved flashlight, I'm not interested.

Maybe a flashlight with red gel, that would just seal the deal.

A cheap p25 radio is going to perform like a cheap radio. just sayin

Was my sarcasm not obvious enough in my post?

I'll stick with my Motorola Astro Sabers for P25 for now, with the 396xt/996xt/436hp. They work effectively ... but really an improved LED flashlight with red gel is what's missing from the Motos.

I'd be happy with a radio that programs easily from the KEYPAD like any of the big 3 radios. And leave out the flashlight, & FM radio. If I wanted to have to drag my laptop along, well I'd stick with Motorola radios. Wait, I already have them.

I'd like to see one with wide band receive like the VX-6R, but likely it will be a cheaper version of the Anytone handhelds.

Wide band receive has been popular in amateur radio handhelds and mobiles for years and, frankly, I think the hams who ask for it are kidding themselves.

Most amateur radio transceivers make lousy scanners. Typically, the scan speed on amateur radio transceivers is slower than modern scanners. And, no transceiver made for the amateur radio market supports the trunking protocols that are often found in modern scanners. The standard answer here is "if you want a scanner, buy a scanner".

The real issue is that wide band receive capability in an amateur radio transceiver just opens the door for intermod and overload problems. Radio Shack made a name for themselves with the HTX-202 handheld because it was "ham bands only". That radio had a really good receiver for the 2m band because it wasn't trying to receive DC to daylight.

You can't get much more open than the Baofengs are right now.

I bet if the Baofeng's went and saw a good therapist they could become more open.

Its all about getting in touch with your inner self and letting go ... are you telling me the UV-5 series and its variants have gone though that therapy?

No?

I thought not.

New Game Changer Radio YAWN!

Baofeng or Wouxun will probably gives us another "YAWN" dual band ho hum radio. I am underwhelmed. Have seen little to make me even remotely interested in buying another radio, portable or mobile. A game changer would be some of what people on this thread have described in some of the earlier posts. Personally I doubt we will see much. Manufacturers have to learn to make what WE want and I have seen no evidence that this will take place any time soon.

A real game changer would be from this point on all the batteries will be backwards compatible with all the new radios! And they add a high capacity for the Gt-3 which is actually an ok radio for the price.

I hope not (all we need is more bootleg users on the marine band

Especially if it has a working siren. That might be hazardous to sailors.

I know this is all just guessing at this point but how is a marine radio, (and I quote) going to change everything, commercial users, amateurs, ?

I don't think it will be a marine radio. I was making what my grown children and their friends have always called "Dad jokes". :D For most people, the response is a groan and rolling of the eyes. The odd ones, much like myself, usually laugh. It's like a gang sign for humor.
