N.C. State Parks Law Enforcement YIPER usage

Have noticed N.C. State Park L.E. rangers using local VIPER channels such as Burke county sheriff's office dispatch to run license and wanted ,firearm checks,calling in as South Mountain 856 or similar,instead of using their assigned VIPEr channel for their agency,maybe reception issues?Also Mt. Mitchell state park L.E, rangers call in on the National Park Service Blue Ridge Parkway digital channels for similar requests,also using "800" format.

Well I wouldn't think it would be a reception issue if they are just using a different talkgroup on the same system. Perhaps some sort of event with multiple agencies in the area so they are using a common talkgroup?

Because the Sheriff and NPS dispatch centers are staffed 24/7/365 and have access to the appropriate databases. The rangers use the S.D. or NPS talk group because the dispatch centers don't routinely monitor the State Parks talk groups.

keep in mind as was mentioned above by kn4ptu there are quirks for the Parks guys that other LE doesn't have to deal with. within the the parks everyone is using older handheld analog VHF stuff usually. The park office does a 9-5ish type thing.

At Morrow Mountain they actually tote two different handhelds on their duty belt, one for inside the park 159.42/151.25 etc and the other radio for UASI/VIPER comms. Without MDT's and sometimes spotty coverage due to terrain, occasionally a vehicle stop has to be run thru someone getting online in the office to check things talking back and forth on VHF. it ain't quite Andy Griffith days, but it sure resembles a more quaint time.
