Gentlemen-

I saw an ad on Craigslist for a BC785D in the Omaha area. Stupid question, and the answer is probably brutally obvious and slapping me in the face like a wet fish, but am I correct in assuming that scanner will follow N-WIN? I want a p-25 scanner, and this is one of the best deals I've seen on one ever. Advice? I already know it'll follow the RACOM system up here in Norfolk. Before anyone shoots me a link to the 785D wiki, save your breath. I've read it already. I just need a definitive green-light to pull the trigger on this.

No that scanner will not work on N-WIN. It only decodes conventional astro digital voice and Motorola type 2 (3600 Baud) astro digital voice. It can not trunk track a P25 (9600 Baud) trunking system.

Since that one is out, how about a BC296D? I know there was someone around here that had one a year or two ago, right when N-WIN was in infancy. What's the coverage like in this area? I know the whole "no traffic if no one is affiliated with the tower" business, so save that. I'm talking about now, real world, today. I've heard kind of mixed reviews about it, so I'd like to get everyone's take on it.

What I'm looking for is someone who's had this scanner on this system in this area. What kind of range can a guy expect? I live in the southwest part of the city, so there's not a lot blocking my view, etc. I can almost see the RACOM tower from my place.

I live near 13th/Benjamin and have a Pro106 with a Diamond CA77 antenna. I get Norfolk/Humphrey and occasionally Osceola towers over N-WIN. RACOM is not a problem, I also hear Pierce/Stanton/Platte Counties also.

That's the input I was looking for. Thanks a ton, buddy!

I once had a BC 296D when I first moved up here about 2 years ago, it wasn't a bad scanner, handled ORION well, but I didn't have it long enough to fully test N-WIN with it, I had it when N-WIN fired up the Norfolk tower and did testing. Drawback with it to monitor N-WIN is you will need a banplan vs. Pro106, GRE and the newer Uniden models which are more like a "plug and play" type of scanner.

Your welcome, happy to help!'

As a side note, I wasn't really worried about picking up the RACOM system. I was just kinda curious as to what kind of range I could expect on the N-WIN system. Now, to cross my fingers and hope I can snag this BC296D I've been looking at... I figure someone's gonna snatch it up before I do though.

You're referring to the Trunking Table on the main N-WIN page, right? I just want to make sure "in case" I do snag this unit.

If you get the BC296D and the programming software doesn't come with it, get some programming software and cable, Butel has software out for the BC296D, it makes it a lot easier to program and manage your banks and functionality of your scanner. I use WIN500 for my Pro 106.

Yep, the bandplan you will need is contained in the Misc.System Information box.

Don't want to get too in-depth yet, but I'm having a hard time gripping the concept of the custom table. I've got the software already on my computer, just trying to do a "dry run" and see what it will do. I see 7 entries on that table but my software only limits to three. I'm confused. I downloaded the ARC250 software to do this. I also have ScannerPro on my computer and it's got the same thing.

The band plan in the database is for Radio Shack scanners not uniden. I send an update for Uniden.
I couldn't get a 796D working on the system. They has been some speculation if the 796D and 296D will work on non 800Mhz P25 systems.

Okay, I'll just kick back and relax then.

Have we come to a consensus on the bandplan for the N-WIN system on that scanner yet? I'd hate to have to pass up on this steal of a deal just because we can't figure out the bandplan thing. I've tried sitting down and figure up how to make a custom bandplan but it all looks like Chinese to me. I'm a pretty smart fella but for the life of me I can't figure it out. Maybe someone else here has it figured out and would like to chime in. I'm tempted to get this scanner and try the bandplan already listed and see if that will work.

To put it another way, I would like a definitive answer from someone who has this scanner monitoring this system now. Is the custom table needed? If so, what table do I use? If not, OK Cool. I'm not looking for 150 different links saying what worked on their systems that have nothing to do with N-WIN. To be honest, I've seen wiki articles and posts from several years ago that have said yes you do and no you don't need a bandplan.
