"You have too many different hoods, too many styles. Something's going to happen," said Leon Smith, a 26-year-old African American from Georgia who was in town to watch the relays. But his friend, Chris Johnson, 24, of Dallas said that if it was an "all-white event," the mall wouldn't close.

this was taken out of the local newspaper in Austin Texas. The Highland Mall Closed early last Sat. because of Safety reasons, and now the NAACP is going to boycot mall sometime between now and this Sat.

Sixth Street hums during Texas Relays, but Highland Mall all quiet

Now the reason I am posting this on here is because I have a online scanner feed for Austin Texas, and knowing from pervious incidents like this it can get pretty messy. So listen to the Austin Texas feed to hear whats going on, you never know what you could be missing. Besides this recent event there is always something going on.

Thank You and Happy Scanning!!

(I will try to keep people updated on here in regrades to this incident. If anyone has anything they would like to add inregrades to this please do so.)

I haven't found any mall yet that I enjoy going to.

The "utes" running around without any parents are ridiculous.

I think the company is doing what is in their best interest. It sounds to me like the mall is on the decline (Dillards leaving) and that the last thing they need is to have another large fight broke out like the article states happened in 2007.

Maybe this even will be like the "peaceful" Juneteenth celebrations that we have, I mean only a FEW people have to die so the rest can have fun, right?

Shouldn't we all just accept the lowest common denominator? That's the "American Way" these days. God forbid somebody has to do something for themselves and act responsibly.

I came in here, after reading the title of thread, thinking what the heck that had to do with scanning, but you're right. One of texasemt13's good friends was a bartender downtown there for a couple years, and said every time the relays came it was absolutely horrible and there was always a shooting each year.

It was pretty crazy down there this year as well- I can't imagine having to work one of these events (or at the bars afterwards- as David said a lot of my friends do).

So the NAACP is issuing "economic sanctions" huh? Ahhahahaha...

You can bet that APD is on top of this, as a department they are pretty proactive about dealing with the public's concerns.

I thought it was interesting that they asked an African American what he thought and he agreed that something would happen because of all the "tension" that goes along with "representing" different groups:

"You have too many different hoods, too many styles. Something's going to happen," said Leon Smith, a 26-year-old African American from Georgia who was in town to watch the relays.

How can the NAACP argue with that?

Oh, and the bar that closed, The Flamingo Cantina, is an awesome place to go hear some great live music (no C&W here); once saw "Grimey Styles," there and that place was off the chain...

If I had a business and the NAACP announced a boycott, I would consider it a good thing.................
