I would like to thank all of my friends and Co-Workers who help pull off our little block party at the last minute. To show off the equipment an to make a there presence known, really made a great impression on the children and their families.

A big Thanks go to Wichita PD North, Sedgwick Co EMS and Via Christi Trama team. I know we invited the Fire dept as well but do to circumstances beyond there control, they was un able to attend. But thank you anyway for trying! You were sorley missed.

Now, to explain how this came about....
My wife and her friend have been working on this low income apt complex for over 2 years now. Her friend inherited this complex from her father and she felt it best to bring it up to standards.
It was about time!

She and her husband manage to run off the dope dealers and prostitutes. My wife and daughter was hired to help redecorate and me and my son did yard work, getting rid of the alcohal bottles, trash and tires.

We had our first block party last year and, well.... Not a big turn out. But that was ok. This year was different. Our friends got a loan, Hired a contractor and made drastict exterior changes which inturn brought in better tenants such as single families. It was nice to see that area with little children with smiling faces.

One of the biggest changes she made is to offer the Patrol North Police an apartment for them to come to to do there paper work. It has mutiple phone lines and a high speed internet connection. They have not accepted it as of yet. It still needs to meet aproval from the PD admin. If they do there presence alone would detour the crime rate dramaticly.

THATS THE GOAL

Im attaching a few pics to show our event.

Overheard radio traffic on internet scanner feed, where officers were reminded by dispatch that this was "National Night Out" and officers were to stop in at events in their areas.

Topeka Night Out turns deadly

Man Killed, Officer Injured in Two Hit And Runs
Kevin MacDonald

One man is dead and a police officer injured following two hit and run accidents last night.

Both incidents occurred within an hour of each other. Police say it all began with a fight.

At approximately 8:20 Saturday night 40-year-old Paul Juarez and 25-year old Charles Demler were struck by a black Ford F-150 travelling westbound near 6th and Gray.

Both were taken by American Medical Response to a local hospital where Juarez later died. a witness who asked to remain anonymous says the incident stemmed from a brawl.

"I was at the yield sign between 10th and 6th and Branner, and i seen the black Harley Davidson truck do a u-turn in the middle of the street and hit two guys with a baseball bat and sent him flying, he kept going. There was so much blood, I couldn't help the poor man."

The driver, 33-year old Fernando Cabello fled the scene. Police were able to locate Cabello at St. Francis Hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening injures. When Cabello was released from St. Francis he was arrested and booked into Shawnee County Jail on charges of first degree murder and attempted first degree murder.

"We believe he was the driver, we have identified the second man involved and we are questioning him as well," Kristi Pankratz, Topeka Police Department Public Information Officer, said.

Approximately an hour later corporal Jamey Haltom of the Topeka Police Department was investigating the incident when he was struck by a car travelling northbound in the 200 block of SE Golden.

"He was searching for the suspect vehicle in the prior incident," Pankratz said.

Haltom was treated at a local hospital with a broken leg. Police believe these were isolated incidents.

Police continue to search for a white 1980's model Ford Tempo orFord Mustang in connection with the second hit and run that injured Haltom.

Police ask individuals with any information on either of these two incidents to contact accident reconstruction at 368-9454 or crimestoppers at 234-0007.
