Was just at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, and the Law net frequencies were encrypted. I did not visit the south or east rim, so I wouldn't know if they are also. The Fire, Admin, and Med nets were P25 in the clear. I was wondering what other national parks are using encryption on law frequencies.

I have not been to the Grand Canyon in a little while, but there is always lots of conventional analog and P25 traffic in Coconino NF. Next time I'm up nort I'll pay special attention to the federal bands.

White Sands National Monument is policed by NPS. Their main law channel is encrypted. Though a lot of main operations, rangers non LE, maintenance, LE, operate in clear on another main channel for interop purposes with the locals but can switch if needed but they don't. All serious business is done on a secure LE channel though many mistake the main monument repeater as only NPS LE for that park.

I am also wondering if the Kaibab north frequencies have changed. I had all the listed frequencies for the Kaibab NF programmed in, but didn't hear anything coming all the way down from fredonia back down through that part of the forest. There was even a small fire started by lightning on the Kaibab/grand canyon boundy they were both working on, but I only heard traffic on the GC fire net not the Kaibab frequencies. would have been a good time to search the federal band while they were working the fire. They had a helicopter up with the Bambi bucket. I heard a lil but of traffic from the coconino nf while in the area. Was all analog. I would imagine that the south rim is also encrypted but I didn't go there so I don't know.

I think there used to be a feed covering the south rim law, fire, and med nets. Now the only feed I see for the Grand canyon South rim only covers fire and med nets, so my guess is that the south rim is indeed encrypted as well.

BillH1 - you can find out easily on radioreference com frequency database, just search for the NFS for your state and area, the database should be able to tell you Frequency, Digital Mode, and Tones as well as Talkgroups. even the Updates are Highlighted.

I know, but I think the frequencies in the DB are outdated for kaibab, because I programmed every frequency listed in the Arizona federal database. I didn't hear a thing off those frequencies. Even when there was a small brush fire on the kaibab, Grand canyon boundry. Maybe the kaibab fire units are using the GC fire net because I did see 2 USFS engines inside the park, or maybe it was just quiet inside the NF that day.

The more people stream, the more that will become encrypted..

I do agree. It seems like more and more agency's are citing online streaming as their reason to encrypt, but I think another reason is just that it is so easy and inexpensive for agency's to encrypt now. I think streaming is a part of the reason, but not the only reason. Anyway, I don't want to turn this into an encryption debate, I am just curious what other nation parks, or recreation areas etc use encryption.

I was at the GC North Rim at the end of Sept.; did hear medical, fire traffic but not ranger LE traffic so it may be encrypted. Lake Mead NPS and Hoover Dam frequencies are still receivable.

BillH1 - regularly monitor NPS Point Reyes and GGNRA and I can tell you, most Radio calls are in the Clear, but they do Sometimes use TAC or Tactical Frequencies that are Encrypted for sensitive comms Specially during events like the SF Fleet Week Airshow, but also when Secure Comms are warranted.

Some NPS Law Enforcement runs almost exclusive full time encryption, such as the Natchez Trace National Parkway Rangers. Others run encryption only on certain operations as the Great Smokey Mountains National Park Rangers. Some have not made the conversion to P25 yet, though this is getting less with every year. YMMV.

In AZ all federal land mgt agencies LE officers ie: NPS, FS, BLM FWS are encrypted and are dispatched by one federal interagency LE dispatch in PHX. A
