While listening to one of the many police agencies put out severe weather dispatches around 12:30pm CDT today, I heard in the background while the dispatcher was talking, the National Weather Service in Indianapolis calling Region 1 on 800. What talkgroup would the NWS be using to communicate like this?

Kyle. What you heard in the background at the post was a phone system called NAWAS.All Indiana State Police Post have this system. It is a landline based system using a telephone line to all on the system. Sounds like to Dispatcher had the audio turned up on the dispatch desk . When a family member worked at ISP Dist 13 Lowell post it was not un common to hear Chicago weather calling ISP 13 on the NAWAS phone. ISP Dist 51 Pendleton is the central warning point for the state of Indiana. This NAWAS system is telephone line based and cannot be monitored by any scanner. The NAWAS system is a National system so all the states can talk to each other in times of a National Emergency. The NAWAS system is tested every week.Hope this info helps answer your question.

While that's good info, it is not helpful. When they refer to "800" that means 800MHz, I.e. SafeT. He is looking for the TG that they use.

I've heard "Indianapolis Weather" calling ISP 52 on SW MA CALL before. My guess is it was on that or one of the other SW MA talkgroups.

That's more like what I was thinking it could be. The NAWAS system would make sense if they had been calling a specific post, but since they were calling Region 1, I would think it was probably on one of the MA talk groups. I've just never heard it before, which makes me think it would be on a regional MA and maybe not SW. And since I live in the Chicago NWS jurisdiction, I would never have guessed the NWS had that capability.

Thanks for the replies.

I know that both NWS Indianapolis & Northern Indiana have 800mhz radios to be able to talk to SEMA, they also monitor one of the SW MA talkgroups (I forget which one) for weather reports during severe conditions.
