I've just become aware that a form of prior restraint is occurring in the forums, the so-called naughty words list. I can't recall that there has been a serious problem with cursing, profanities, and the like, so the major result seem to be the editing of perfectly acceptable words and names simply because they contain a particular string of letters, not even a four-letter word, nor one of the words on George Carlin's famous (or infamous) seven words you can't say on TV list.

So, my question is this, do we really need this automatic enforcement of what has been deemed proper and inproper? I don't know, I like to think that most of us are capable of keeping our language in check, and for the remaining ones, a moderator can step in when those rare incidents occur.

That's my two cents.

when I cant write words like p**** molasses, or gl**** Its kinda makes posting a pain in the ass.

But I guess it makes me think of new words.

No look at that. My last word in the sentance was clearly the bad word and yet the others were edited?

Wee bit overzealous curse word engine there eh.

This does not really help but I thought I might mention it so that we know we are not alone with this problem on this board.
I also frequent a local fishing board. Their word catcher is even more aggressive than this one. It will even pick up "bad words" that are embedded in other words. It also watches for ethnic and other slurs and changes the offending "word" to "bleep". The recipe section is sometimes hilarious and sometimes just unintelligible. I don't mean to offend anyone here but an example is the word "SPICE" that comes out "bleepE". The Klondyke fishing area is well known to NJ/NY fishermen but it comes out "Klonbeep". Crazy thing is that most times you would not even be thinking of an offensive or "bad" word but by using "bleep" it forces you to think of that stand alone word so in fact spreads this language all around where it would not exist without the word-catcher.

Somehow I must have missed that in my moderator orientation. I mean I don't know that it doesn't exist, but I have never run into it yet.

Don't worry... I'm sure the board won't pass up an chance to show it to you!

Bob

EDIT: Oh sure... now the word Pass is apparently allowed?!

Put a comma after it to replicate the same behavior as before.

If the Vbulletin censor engine is anywhere similar to the phpBB one, it's a text file that Lindsay has to peruse by hand.

Wanted to bring this back again-

I have run into this same thing a couple of times now. one person can type a word and it comes through fine. I type the same word or even "Quote" the post and it bleeps it out.

Is this all being done through the forums, or is there a setting on my computer that could be
causing this?

It drives me crazy not to be able to type the word sca ner (I can't spell it correctly) especially on this website!

It's not even that. In one post I typed the word g l a s s twice - once got bleeped. It's in the board software that checks for bad words - like everything else in this world, it's not perfect.

I believe that's a pattern-matching problem. I'm willing to bet that if I type glass without a comma, that word won't be censored. But if I type glass, with a comma after it, that word will be censored.

I think the pattern-matching and/or the word list needs an overhaul. I wonder what would happen if one typed the core word that the system is trying to censor? :)

Bizarre - nothing got censored in this post (though I edited my last sentence just in case people might get offended somehow).

Followup:

Must be an individual users preference setting, I don't see any censorship...

So, you typed scanner and it bleaped it out?

That's pretty wierd, maybe Mr. Blanton sets it on people who have a history of cursing a lot on the forums or new members.

Watch this... I can't even quote you

I have never typed any "Naughty" before. I can't believe it would be a "per user" issue

Also I would think if it was anything to do with lindsay, he would at least let me type "that word" since that is what this site is all about!!

What is the big deal with (Sca ner) anyway?

I doubt it's per-user, though I don't have another explanation for what's happening there. I've had it censor 'glass' before, as stated in my earlier message.

Reminds me of a comic strip.. ah, here we go..

Over here.
I moderate an Infopop brand UBB board, and we just have a list of words that we tend. We've never had this sort of problem.

Something is definitely off, though. Especially scanner- how could that be viewed as offensive?
