I hope Trumpetman does not mind but I renamed his original
thread and modified it into a "Metro Areas in NC Federal Freqs" Thread.
I will sticky this for awhile as it appears there is some intense interest
in this topic.
Feel free to share Metro Federal Freqs from around the State.
Just a reminder: Don't post any freqs that could possibly endanger any ongoing sensitive operations.
Thanks again carry on with the great Frequency info!
Happy Monitoring

Thanks for the sticky Marshall.

I've got a few more random logs picked up over the past few days. Those of you with Unidens need to experiment with the search & store feature if you haven't already, it really helps track usage of frequencies down without having to be tied to a computer; it's quite helpful when you're out and about. Here's a decent list of what I've got so far/need help with.

173.7625 | ??? DPL | Blue Ridge Parkway - Rich Mtn. [still need DPL]
173.7625 | ??? DPL | Blue Ridge Parkway - Cowee Bald [still need DPL]

172.6000 | NAC 167 | Possible FBI?
172.4500 | NAC 140 | NAC listed as 150 (S&S logged NAC 140 last night, 140 matches pattern better]
168.7250 | 103.5 PL | Pisgah NF (possibly hearing Clingmans Peak)
168.1250 | NAC 167 | Possible FBI? Internet shows no connections at all.

The Scanner defaults to 67.0 Hz on P25 when it hasn't been able to determine that it is P25. You can ignore 67.0 and rely on $152

Bill,

Last year I was getting 67.0 PL a lot. This year, upon returning to school, the signal has gone to digital. I'm not sure if that still means the scanner is defaulting, or if whatever agency is using the freq has upgraded to digital.

Updates discovered last night/early morning during studying....damn calc II :(

165.1375 CSQ - Seems to be CSQ, most transmissions are very short, looks to be a popular military support freq, may be in use at KCLT. Will have to monitor some more. Could also be simplex, some conversations are very weak/static & some blips are a single user coming in much more clearly.

165.2375 261 DPL - Looks like a popular freq for VA hospitals, probably from the Salisbury VA.

165.2375 is CBP not VA, might you have mean 162.2375 or 163.2375 which are common VA Hospital frequencies...

Good Eye

Yeah it's a typo, good eye. Numbers start running together after such a long night haha.

163.2375 for VA

165.1375 remains the same. Thanks for the correction.

I don't have a digital scanner in the house or the ability to decode NAC's, but I did hear a several-second long transmission on 173.5875 in P25 earlier here in Greensboro.

Only heard one transmission and I plugged that into my XTS, but so far I have not heard anything else.

As an update, right after I made the last post, I heard fairly heavy traffic for about 15 minutes on this frequency (that or 173.585 as it defaults to in the scanner) that was in P25 mode. Sounded like either a repeater or an aircraft.

I was receiving it on the scanner and not on my XTS even with the squelch open, so this tells me that it isn't close.

Update on 173.5875:

I'm hearing completely different voices & unit numbers today.... 500 series units this time (520 IIRC). Units made reference to checking on fire wood and riding over to Bandit's Roost to get an RV moved. Bandit's Roost is on W. Kerr Scott Reservoir, just west of Wilkesboro. My question is, what agencies are present in that area. I know Army Corps of Engineers are there, but who else could be using the channel. Any ideas?

I think that given what you have just posted, there is a strong possibility that what you are hearing is the rangers at the lake.

It's still too weak for me to make out on my XTS.

Are those gonna be Federal Rangers with NPS/USFS? or state rangers. I can't find much info on who patrols and is responsible for the area.

Interesting, thanks for the link. I guess it's possible that they had a helicopter come in a while back which would explain the "Flight 55 landed on a hornets nest". Now that I think about it, I don't think it's all that logical to have a hornets nest on the middle of an aircraft parking ramp either...

I'm gonna label this as W. Kerr Scott Reservoir Rangers for right now. I'll see if anything matches up with the other frequency over the next few days.

If you've got a spare mode or two Jake, plug in 172.4500 with a NAC 140 & NAC 150 and see if you can nail down activity on either one....NAC 150 was reported a while back, but i logged NAC 140 on the frequency recently. That's gonna be the Fishers Peak site, so it should be in range for you if you're willing to try.

Thanks again!

Well.. another thing to consider is that when were are talking about military traffic, they are going to be using their tactical jargon for whatever they are talking about. I wouldn't really expect to hear them using the callsign "Flight 55" for anything either though.

FWIW, I do have the entire parkway system programmed into my XTS and I haven't heard a peep on it. The only thing I have heard was a distant repeater on 172.750 in mixed mode with DPL 025.

Hmm, the DPL tone helps; judging by the frequency, it could either be the Doughton repeater, or the Grassy Hill repeater up in Virginia. I'll add the note to the wiki.

Actually, the Apple Orchard Rptr. is listed as having a 025 DPL. It looks like these BRP repeaters have excellent wide-area coverage.

Could it have been "Site 55" instead of "Flight 55". Site as in campsite. 511 is a valid unit number for the Corps of Engineers rangers at Kerr Scott and the gatehouse reference could be the entrance station to the campground. On analog 163.5125, the Kerr Scott Rangers have always had a strong signal here in the Triad. I will plug it and see what I hear.

Just heard 301 calling 800 on 172.450 in P25 mode with no answer. I had this one programmed into the XTS with a receive NAC of 140.. so that is Fisher's Peak I assume.

Also just heard 264 calling 800 on 172.750 in analog mode with DPL 025 on the scanner.

I logged 172.2250 [131.8 PL] a few nights ago, and haven't heard much traffic on it since. I show it as an input to a Pisgah NF repeater, Sutton Top Mtn. to be precise. My info is a little dated with the Pisgah NF channels, can anyone clarify with updates/other uses? Also, can anyone contribute info about Uwharrie NF? I see there's a small entry in the database, but it seems somewhat lacking (only one primary frequency) Any admin/fire/police channels hiding in personal listings/notes? Thanks a bunch!

Came home to find 167.8625 active on the scanner... sounds like POCSAG paging. I see lots of references to it being used for VA Hospital paging... but I don't think we have one here in Greensboro..
