just a friendly suggestion : instead of worrying over logging, just plug all the reported active freqs into your scanners and do THREE things :
1) LISTEN
2) LISTEN
3) LISTEN

trust me, it never fails ! and it's fun !

enjoy ! :)

Thanks for the info. I thought it may have been military due to the Xray callsign, but I guess not

the Xray is simply from the standard phonetic alphabet for the letter X....( alpha,bravo,charlie,delta....xray)

civilian (private) flights all start with the letter N, so they usually drop that in calling....such as tail number N123CP is the full tail, but he'll just say "123 Charlie Papa"....here's a hint : numbers first, letters second in civilian (private) callsigns.

military flights have similar tail numbers, but you'll usually hear them using tactical callsigns using a codeword and number designating their plane or flight...such as MADDOG 31.....usually an unusual/distinctive word---NOT a letter from the phonetic alphabet---followed by the number. just the opposite of what you hear civilian (private) aircraft doing !

course, commercial airlines use callsigns that include a word and number combo too...like Delta 301 or Piedmont 100 or JetBlue 101...but those are usually recognizable (some international airlines use 'nicknames' in their callsign, like Speedbird 301 for British Air or Shamrock 201 for Aer Lingus).

these are just general guidelines...not hard and fast rules...but hope they help when hearing and identifying aircraft callsigns ! it's can be a real mystery sometimes !!

good luck

Not to be smart but I use a pen and notebook. Like Barefootdipole said, when I began to listen to MilAir traffic the first thing I did was just listen. Alot of the transmissions are brief and fast.

I have a good callsign/callword database that I can check whenever I hear a callsign I do not recognize. If you provide your email address I will send it to you. A good place to look for a good callsign database is Mark Cleary's site at the Low Country Listening Post http://lowcountry-listening-post.blogspot.com/. He is in South Carolina but he monitors NC as well. He provides a lot of good information. Another one is the Chief's website at the MT Milcomm Post : http://mt-milcom.blogspot.com

Does anyone know a starting point for Mil-Air listening in WNC? Is there a generally busy frequency or any frequencies designated just for the Snowbird MOA? Most of the mil traffic that comes through the AVL airport transmits on VHF air (even though AVL has UHF capabilities), so I can't even really track the definite stuff I know. Thanks.

Mil-Air in WNC is hard to come by. I've left my scanner on all day and only got two or three hits most days when I am home in Burnsville. Here are a few frequencies to try though:

235.1
240.350
255.4
257.8
269.575
276.5
281.1
297.8
372.2
385.6

I've logged hits on all of these frequencies in Burnsville so plug these in and let us know what you hear, if any. Also, it helps to try the" guard" frequencies (121.5,243.0), you may catch mil-air on these frequencies as well.
