yeah, it sprung my ears into the upright and locked position....i've heard that "RALEIGH RADIO" call used once before....about 5 years ago with an Army flight headed back to the west from down here.....it also sounded like a blind call.

I'm not familiar with ATC calls from your area, does Raleigh (RDU) ATC ever use "Raleigh Radio" ?

Raleigh Radio

Raleigh Radio is the Raleigh FSS (Flight Service Station). I believe 255.4 is the nationwide UHF frequency for military flights contacting a FSS. For those who don't know, a FSS is where flight plans are filed, opened or closed and also where pilots get weather information. On the VHF side, they can be found around 122-123 mhz. The actual location of Raleigh Radio is at RDU beside the observation area and they have remote transmitters at different locations in NC. I believe they all used to be operated by the FAA but I think they are now operated by Lockheed (or somebody like that) on a contract for the FAA.

SUPERB INFO ! Thanks !!!!

I always suspected it was FSS/ATC/FAA related to flight plan or weather info, given the name RALEIGH RADIO....but never had verification before.

Heard Condor flights calling RALEIGH RADIO again tonight on 255.4.......

Thanks again...

I looked back in my logs/scratch pads and I had that other logging of RALEIGH RADIO FSS about 8 years ago on VHF 122.1 with an ARMY aircraft calling them....

I just caught my first Mil Air transmission that I could actually listen to and make out what was said. I was in a scramble to write down the info but I did catch what I believe was "Kimbal, Campbel, Kimbo 245 on the Asheville UHF freqs. He was headed west and handed off to to ATL Center where I lost him. Anybody familiar with the callsign, or possible callsign? I do know he was a fighter and a few of the ROTC nazis at school said they saw a Raptor go overhead earlier...but there again...these are the same guys who were arguing whether if a Bell 206 was a actually a Cobra or Chinook....
