Great site ....you the man ....thanks for the post
getting off on a tanget here so last thing on that topic... you can practice decoding digital modes from the websdr as well with proper signal routing on you pc...

But thats all for another thread. There are plenty of threads on RR redarding that stuff. I recommend doing some research if you haven't already.

Someone should be listening for arrivals in the Fayetteville area. Got one of the unknown hex codes AE0440 seeming to head that way. Looked to have come out of Greenville, SC- maybe the Lockheed facility. Altitude and speed are consistent with a helicopter. 8900ft 155-170kts

Interesting. This hex has been seen in Europe on my box in Btown, FH's box in VA. There was even a call in the Mode-S of Thor and that call was also used by hex code AE0441.

One theory I saw theorized a CBP aircraft. I say probably not in if in Europe, but that could have beena hijacked hex (sorta like that term). ;-)

Anyway worth watching AE0440 and AE0441.

Thanks FH and wished I lived over there to check it out.

MCAS Cherry Point Base Profile

While reviewing the RRDB for Cherry Point last night I noticed it was, well a mess. I just recently got the new MCAS Cherry Point ATC Facility Manual dated 5 Aug 2016 (you can to at http://cherrypointatc.com/ATCWeb/2016 NKT Facility Manual.pdf

So here is a new profile for MCAS Cherry Point (KNKT). I have sent all the necessary corrections to the db admin team, but since it was messed up pretty good, I thought I would post an update here for anyone who may be in the area. As always any confirmed updates, corrections or additions are always appreciated and you can PM me here. There is additional info in the RRDB update I submitted so be sure to check it out when it is released. Without further ado . . . enjoy and good hunting de Chief

SPUR 71,81 are doing random A/R boom tests together up with ZDC Ctr Norfolk Va 133.825 1310z and using their A/A boom squad freq 268.025 MHz.

My question is can anybody tell me or direct me to a link or website that could explain what I'm listening to? I guess what I'm trying to say is there any good reading material for newbie? Any help would be appreciated

Online, probably not Pete. There has been a lot over the years published in various magazines and books, some like Monitoring Times are no longer in publication. My question back at you are you wanting to learn more about the conversations you are hearing or the user/usage of the frequencies you are monitoring? If it is the later you would need to provide a freq/location in order to nail down a user/usage. If it is just trying to understand the content of what is being monitored again that depends on the user/usage of a frequency. For instance, some freqs are used for air traffic control. Comms on these freqs involve the safe movement of aircraft and they use a lot of phraseology that is documented in FAA publications. You will find some useful information on the FAA website at https://www.faasafety.gov/gslac/ALC/libview_normal.aspx?id=17272. Some of that terminology is explained in the FAA Pilot/Controller glossary at https://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/publications/media/pcg.pdf.

If it is communications involving military pilots you might want to check out the list of multiservice tactical brevity codes at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiservice_tactical_brevity_code.

And if you stay tuned there "may be" in the near future an article in a radio related publications that is aimed at the beginning milcom monitor. Hope that helps a bit. If you have something specific you can reply to this or PM here at RR.

Thanks Larry,

I hear a lot of military and both civilian communications since I put up a discone at about 40 feet and used the correct cable to feed my receiver. I am in Pitt County and did not think I could receive a lot of military air because I was too far away from the coast but I was wrong.

It is mostly the military communications I'm trying to decipher. Trying to figure out who they are and what they are doing is difficult for me at the newbie stage. Thank you for providing the links I can see they are going to help out quite a bit.

Thanks again

Pete
