how far away can you here those frequencies?

That question is difficult to answer accurately - there is a formula floating around somewhere for this. However, in general, the higher you get the antenna up in the air, the greater the range (there is a point of diminshing returns, but rarely have I seen anyone approach it). In this game, the typical duckie is good only for local stuff, or if you are at an airshow. A discone or ScanTenna type is a must, as is good quality coax to feed it.

Here in Maryland, it's hilly but not many high mountains (in fact, I think the highest point is just shy of 3000 feet AMSL). With my attic mounted antennas, I could pretty easily hear the Camp David CAP aircraft, a good 150-200 miles away from me. Your range will vary with the height of the antenna and the surrounding terrain

Military Air Exercise?

At approx. 1636 HRS local on Wed., 02 APR monitored the following on 324.65 Mhz AM:

"...Guard 105, possible broken leg...back injury...Guard 106 aircraft impacted with water...no chutes visible...expect no survivors...position Zircon (followed by numerals).

A few minutes later:

A 2nd voice repeats the first message, then advises:

"Suggest moving assets into the area. Helo (numerals) is preparing to launch..."

The Pamlico Sound area was mentioned. Saw nothing on any of the local media. Assume some sort of downed flier SAR exercise.

I know the Nat Guard was supposed to do some type of exercise with helicopters around ENC and as far out as Ocracoke and Billy Mitchell....Maybe this was it...

Greg, what kind of antenna are you using? I'm using a Pro-2096 and it seems deaf on these frequencies even with a beam and a pre-amp....

324.600 was quite busy yesterday with flight training, I was kinda surprised how well it was coming in for me in Charlotte. Thanks for starting this thread and all of the contributors, I've finally found some interesting milair comms to listen to.
