I am traveling to NC this weekend in the area covered by Troop G. DO I need to program the lowband freqs or are they using the viper system. I have never monitored them before. I am using a 996xt. Thanks

Depends on the area you're going through. G2/G4/G6 districts are pretty much fulltime on VIPER (with the occasional low band use), and everyone else is strictly lowband. G3 has dispatch only on VIPER with the occasional reply from troopers on 800.

I would program both, it's such a mixture now with the transition, you can hear traffic anywhere. Lowband seems to travel better in the mountains with the current setup as long as you have a decent mobile antenna. All cars still have lowband and can occasionally be caught using it as a car-to-car channel on the dispatch side.

This will help you determine which districts cover which counties.

Troop E is pretty much the same way. They are all over the spectrum from lowband to VIPER. You may hear them anywhere, it's just no telling.
