What do you mean by "2 way cell phones"?

You probably won't get many answers anyhow since it is illegal in the US.

Yes, you are in the Canada forum, but people here are still over cautious.

not too sure about the 2 ways ( I assume you are referring to the mics)
but as far as cell phones you can scan thru the 900 mhz range and maybe pick something off.

If this is referring to the Telus "MiKE" iDEN system, the frequencies are in the 851-866MHz range but completely unmonitorable. Bell Mobility has a competing PTT product called "10-4" (pretty cheesy name if you ask me) but I have no details, but I am sure it is probably just as unmonitorable.
I'm a bit puzzled by the recent increase in discussion of cellphone monitoring...Canada/US, legal or otherwise.

If you will notice that it is only his second post. It seems to me that a lot of these posts referring to that subject are by people that are probably relatively new to the scanning hobby. Maybe they heard some cordless phone calls on a buddies scanner somewhere down the road and just don't realize how terribly boring monitoring Phone calls are.

brockvegas

Forget about monitoring any kind of phone calls. Illegal for the most part and very, very boring  IMO

It is totally unmonitorable. Telus mike. Uses Digital system for there 2 way system as they do for CDMA cell system. Its not technically a 2 way radio because you are using cell towers to get your signal across, just acts like a 2 way radio. It all uses digital encoding.

Mike is actually iDEN, the same as Nextel.

iDEN *is* technically a 2-way system that happens to have phone capabilities. It is not cellular in that the channels are not in the cellular band 869-894, but in the dispatch band 851-866.

Don't worry mciupa, I caught what you are hinting at.
Thought his conditions of his parole forbid him of using any scanning devices?

I figured it out also. The attention 2 spelling and lack of caps gives it away.

Due to the Electronic Communications Privacy Act Of 1986, scanenrs @ first were to be blocked from being able to recieve said frequencies in the 869 to 894 Megacycle portion of the spectrum. This was NOT enough to satisfy the "Paranoids", so scanners had to reject cell phony
images in the 1990's

Those links provide nothing to those in Canada.

Monitoring remote broadcasts and phones is legal in Canada.

Why do you guys always jump on the band wagon that it's illegal blah blah blah, when clearly you posted this in the Canadian forum and it means nothing?

Here is some legalise to keep you up to date.

Also I beleive that Remote Broadcasts and Cordless Phonies
are off limits too.

Hey there guys and gals. Sorry about that. I just saw the part abouit the Two Way Radio Cell Phonies and missed the Canadian part.
Didn't mean to get anybody upset.
Must be nice to be able to listen to those frequencies.

Even though, aren't the cell phonies up in Canada like here in the States, mostly TDMA or CDMA DIGITAL? Since no scanner, that I am aware of can track CDMA or TDMA must make it kinda hard to listen, eh?

Yes, cellular is much the same in Canada as the U.S. however even though there is lot's of digital cell phone activity, there is still analog cellular left. If you're one of those that has a scanner without the cell phone frequencies then your not missing much, but if you were interested in listening in then I suggest trying to find the image frequencies and look for the analog one's that are available. You may not find many or any at all.

Myself, I've been able to find about 20 some image frequencies that allow me to listen in outside of the regular cellular band. I don't usually listen or program these frequencies in, but every so often I'll check them out to see what's up. Sometimes I'll hear a local tow company taking a call to go to an accident or even people travelling the highways talking to someone about an accident on the highways. Also, it's a good way to pick up all the juicy gossip that likes to flow around all the time.

Uh, I don't know where you are getting this advice from, but I would check out section 184 of the Criminal Code of Canada, which states:

Interception of Communications

Interception
184. (1) Every one who, by means of any electro-magnetic, acoustic, mechanical or other device, wilfully intercepts a private communication is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years.

End of quote.

But if you want to be our test case and change this, let me know how it goes... :)

They are on public radio frequencies. That are analog in nature. I'm sure there's other's that might wanna step in and clarify this.

Your saying it's illegal to listen to analog cellular/cordless/bell telephone dudes on there radios, Ham radio people that make phone patches on the local ham repeater and people with two way radios that use local radio towers to make phone calls from there business radio's?

In my opinion, is there's anything more boring than cell/cordless monitoring, it would be talking about it; it gets hashed and rehashed so many times. Honestly guys there must be something interesting to talk about. I'm outta here.
