I will be heading up to Sturgis Rally today and wanted to take my 396 along and monitor the South Dakota systemwide system. I opened the Arc software to transfer files from RR to the scanner. In one column it gives the Site name/call sign and the other is talk groups. When I check one of the Site names and then select all the call groups it gives me an warning that I'm importing more than 200 trunking Id's and that my scanner can only handle 200 talk group Id's per system. What would be the best to setup the system so I can download it correctly to monitor the systems I want to hear. I mainly want to hear State patrol, EMS, Sheriff, Police, and Fire. Do I select a site name and select the call groups I want to monitor and if it still exceeds the 200 entries would I have to ceate another system and finish adding the talk groups? Also will I have to enter different site names foor the different counties so it can detect the nearest tower so when traveling it recieves the nearest tower for clear transmissions. Sorry for the long question as I'm new to the scanning world and this has me completely stumped.

TIA
Randy

You may want to post this in the South Dakota forum. Someone may already have a system (or systems) file for what you are looking for.

This is the way I programmed the Soth Dakota System. I opened the ArcPro software and selected the RR web service and selected the Call signs/site names for the counties I will be traveling through and the talk groups I wanted to listen to. I programmed them under the South Dakota name for the system. Will this work for monitoring the freq I want to listen to or do I have to set it up another way.

TIA

That should work ok if your monitoring the statewide trunked system, but you will need to put each tower in it's own dynamic memory system, not all trunked frequencies in one big system, and you need to use the custom frequency table in the database in order to track the VHF trunked system correctly. Then you can put the most important talkgroups in their own groups with quick group keys. You can do all this from your ARC396 software.

If you are a novice at setting up a system, this is one of the reasons I mentioned that you should post to the South Dakota forum and see if someone has a system file they would be able to give you. This way you can be sure that it works and you would not need to try to understand how to program the statewide trunked system in the blind.

Also if you divide up your conventional system frequencies by agency (police, fire, etc.) and assign a group quick key, that may make it a little better to keep track of the action.
