Hi All-I have a new Uniden BC-15X coming today. I live in So. Westchester County, NY and want to put in all the new trunking frequencies for Department Of Emergency Services as well as local police/fire in conventional mode with PL's and I have no idea about talk groups, etc. even though I have been into this hobby for a long time. I always had, up until now the lower end of the Uniden Bearcat line. If anyone is out there from my area, please post the set-up steps here for me. I know I cannot put in Yonkers/Greenburgh Police due to P-25.
Thanking everyone in advance.

You should put a query about your area in our NY forum where you're much more likely to get help specific to NY, but I can at least get you started. This article in our wiki has links to pretty much everything you will need to get you started, including the Easier to Read manuals. Don't even think of trying to use the Uniden printed garbage...

Program your DMA Scanner - The RadioReference Wiki

There are links to our glossary, a great explanation of trunking by our own UPMan, links for software and a great deal more here.

FreeScan might help you out.

FreeSCAN - Sixspot Software

I concur with Rt169Radio. I have that scanner and Freescan as well. It's the only thing I will use to program my scanners. Much faster to program it with that than it is to actually sit there and type it out. Just make sure you get the serial to USB adapter to hook it to your computer. Otherwise, you'll be up a creek without a paddle.

Can I set-up my new Bearcat BC-15X without a computer cable? I don't need alpha-tagging now. I know trunking will be almost impossible. Anyone have ideas?
Thanks!

Bob,

The BCT15X comes with a computer cable in the box, albeit serial not USB. Do you have a computer with a serial port? If so, you can use FreeSCAN to program the scanner rather easily.

Responding Back To You.

Hi--Thanks for the rapid response. I am not used to this site yet. I do have an all in one Dell system with Windows 7 and a Intel Pentium Processor. Ok..what do I do with the cable when the scanner comes in today and what part of the computer do I plug it in as you stated it is noit a USB port? Most frequencies are non-trunking except Westchester County, NY Department Of Emergency Services. I don't care about alpha-tagging. I just want to get everything in and I know this will be hard for me. It hasn't arrived yet but will be here by 4:30pm or so. So what is step 1, step 2, step 3,etc. and email me a link to download that free site to program this unit. I have all the lists and talk groups as I am now a New York State Exempt Firefighter.
Thanks!

In the future, please suggest to the OP to report to have a thread moved vs. telling them to cross post :)
