I just bought a USB-1 cable to connect my BCD996XT to the computer for faster programming.
I've installed the driver, and I'm following the setup instructions. However, Windows 7 is supposed to detect the driver "Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port" under "Ports (COMM & LPT)" in the Device Manager. The thing is, I don't have the "Ports (COMM & LPT)" option in my device manager. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

(I've gone into "View" and displayed all hidden items. Still no "Ports (COMM & LPT)" option in my device manager.)

OK. I believe I've managed now to create the Ports (COMM & LPT) option in my Device Manager by going to Run and typing "hdwwiz", then choosing to "Install the hardware that I manually select from a list", clikcing "Show all Devices", and then adding a standard port.
Now I have the Ports (COMM & LPT) option in my Device Manager however both the Port (COM3) and the Universal Serial Bus controller - Unkown Device are still showing me the yellow exclamation triangle.

You should install the drivers before plugging in the cable.
Then Windows will do the rest.

I did. The driver instructions were very clear to install the software before plugging in the device. It's still coming up as an unknown USB device with a status of "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)".

I've tried several times at a total driver uninstall and rebooting, cold-booting and such. I've even tried updating then uninstalling all of the host controllers and USB devices then restarting to get everything back to a default.

Same problem. Unknown Device in Universal Serial Bus Controllers and not showing up in Ports (COMM & LPT).

You may have one of the cables with the pirated chips in it.
That is not your fault. Prolific chips set is known for pirating.

I sure hope not. I think I should try it out in another computer and see what results I get. If the results are positive in another computer then I suppose I'll have to take my computer to a pc repair shop. And if I fail using another computer, then this cable will be returned to the seller.

I'm not sure which software you're using but a lot of people are reporting problems with ARC XT PRO using the USB-1 with WINDOWS 7.

You might check out the thread, "ARC-XT PRO LOCK-UP ON READ FROM SCANNER", dated 04-04-11. I ended up using another cable for programming and the USB-1 for logging purposes.

Well I just received a USB-1 cable direct from Uniden. I performed the install and everything went great. Buyers beware, even if sellers advertise a USB-1 cable and charge you the same as Uniden, they may be selling you a pirated chip, as it was in my case.

If I buy a Serial Rs232 to USB adapter, can I use the cable that came with the scanner, or do I need to purchase a complete cable

Thank you
