need help asap please

can someone please help me program my scanner. I just paid $15 and not even sure if i have to.
I have the wire going from scanner to computer & put in state and county and all it does is give me a giant list of numbers.
I thought the wire was supposed to be doing the down loading for me!?!?!?!??!?!
Please help me

That list of the numbers are talk groups. You have to sit down and think about what you want to listen to.

Alternatively if you have a scanner that supports zip codes you can just put a zip code in. What area of Ohio are you hoping to listen in and what are you hoping to listen to?

To add to what others have already said, it’s important to know what kind of scanner you have because there are a lot of different models that all operate differently. Knowing what kind you have will give someone who knows that particular model a chance to provide better help.

Similarly, it’s helpful to know what you want to listen to as specifically as possible (e.g., xyz town police department) because someone familiar with the area can chime in with helpful information

Whistler WS 1040 It tells me that all i have to do is go to www.radioreference.com with the cord attached from scanner to computer. Then all instructions just stop. I did get on the website & access all the county police/fire/EMS but there is nothing after that, that im able to find as far as putting them on my scanner. I did enter some manually but it doesnt seem to be picking everything up. I would also like to hear weather alerts

What software are you using to access the database at Radio Reference to download frequencies? You haven't mentioned what programming software you're using, so if you don't know, you can't download from the database directly to your scanner without purchasing 3rd party software.

There are three software packages that will work for your scanner. All three have a 30 day free trial period.

Ohio-Brown-Mt.Orab but i have found a list of all the frequencies and have manually entered them. I have no T or G at on my screen while scanning if that matters

You have to have software to import the info for your county into your scanner. Do you have software? If so, you sign in with your RR ID and password. Then you can import what you want into the scanner. Otherwise, programming by hand is going to take forever.
