need help identifying this freq.

138.025 AM ? I'm hearing them talk about manhattan, and the surrounding area. They keep pointing out landmarks to each other. I can hear both of them , and it sounds like they are both in flight, monitoring what other aircraft are doing. Military? (please don't yell at me for not trying to find it. I did do a few searches, but I'm at work, so I can't spend too much time looking. )

You can even listen, if you have TS. I will leave it on from now until I get home (in about two hours) and I will probably listen more then also, if there is still activity. It's pretty interesting.

Definitely aircraft. Most likely military. Don't have any more than that.

just found it listed on milaircomms.com, but it is listed as AFRES Command Net in Oklahoma, whatever that is. Nothing for the NYC area.

Maybe out of the region. In Wis., it is military use, as an Air tac ch. mostly during air-air dogfights.

KC2LVC: keep in mind that most of the aircraft protecting the homeland aren't active duty.... they areeserve component, either national guard or air force reserve. the AFRES COMMAND NET is the air force command net for some of the many aircraft flying all the time over and near conus. in this day of increased aerial security any freq that is assigned to the military can and probably wll be used anywhere it is not being used for a regionally assigned agency..... (ironically enough, during the cold war there were thousands of sorties logged by air guard and air force reserve pilots protecting the coast lines... many of these included intercepts that have yeilded some dramatic fotos...)

Just because I live in NJ, and heard it in NJ, doesn't mean it's an NJ frequency. The receiver is located right on the edge of NJ/NY. And it's air related, so it could've been NY, NJ, CT. It's not specific to any certain area.

Consider posting something worth posting. Not just giving people a hard time.

LVC, I think the point here is that, if you hear a frequency in a certain area, others probably have also. Possibly one of these people will have more infomation about how the frequency is being used in your area. Think of it as climbing up a ladder, you start on the bottom rung and work your way up.

As an example, I hear radio traffic almost every Wednesday at noon on 155.535 MHz, my local SO freq, but it's obviously not my local SO. As I live in the north central part of Oklahoma, in addition to asking about it in the Oklahoma forum, I also ask in the Kansas forum. BINGO! From the information I give, a listener in Kansas is able to ID the user as Crawford County, KS Emergency Management, conducting their weekly radio system check.

If I hadn't gotten a response in the OK or KS forums, then I would have tried the AR and TX forums. Then, if nothing turned up, I would have tried the national forum, with the notation that the state forums had come up dry. Of course, in this case, I would also have tried the RR database, which wouldn't have helped in your situation.

Lou was trying to help, by pointing you in the proper direction. It's incumbent on the older hands to assist the newer users with help on the best ways to use this incredible resource we have here. Please don't take his post or this one in a negative manner.

Search 138.000 to 144.000 MHz in 25 kHz steps in AM mode. You will often hear military aircraft. Usually these frequencies are used for air-to-air communications.

Sometimes they are just for chit-chat, other times they practice aerial dogfighting. You can probably hear them well for about a 150 to 250 mile range (depending upon the altitude of the aircraft).

When you hear these frequencies in use, check the UHF frequencies for the nearest ARTCC and Aerial Refueling frequencies. They are likely to be active also.

For what its worth .. AWACS from Tinker patrol the east coast and they take on fuel while patroling ..

Although I don't show it as one of their regular frequencies it could have been
the 177th FW from the NJ-ANG out of Atlantic City IAP. Their V18 frequency is
138.050 so they could have dropped a few kc down.

Pay close attention to the comms and listen for any callsigns.
The 177th have known to use the following:

COSMIC, DEVIL, HAMMER, SMASH, SNAKE and TATER.

Okay, just heard a few things. They are using 138.425 today. I heard him mention "capture the flag" So, combat training of some sort. I know nothing about Air Force activity, but I'm not sure how you'd be doing "capture the flag" in the air. In Paintball, sure. They also were checking what each other's fuel was at, referring to it in pounds. example, one was at 11 thousand pounds, and he mentioned he wants to leave at about 7 thousand to have enough to get back. Very strong signals in the NY metro area right now. Seems to always be about this time of day also..3:30-4pm, est. Haven't heard any call signs yet though.
