Need help - new user of 436hp

I live in Canada - Brampton which is a suburb of metro Toronto. I have the Toronto Fire and Police bands but aolthough they are very busy I only get the occasional brief hit. I have extended the time between scans, do I need another antenna? or?? newbie since 25 years ago so I really do not know what I am doing - grateful for any help

First thing that comes to mind - and affects most new users - make sure to enable (all?) services to start and trim back if necessary.

Trymail - thx for responding - I seem to
have the appropriate broadcasters enabled, I get the OPP perfectly but I really want to hear Metro Toronto and I wonder what to do?
