NEED HELP ON RECEPTION!!!

OK i just got a scanner for a early christmas present and I have programmed my local frequencies in, but i mean i hear stiff sometimes but there shoud be why more talk then what I hear and I live about 7 miles from our town... I am just wondering if i have poor reception and what i can do to help it or if my town just dosent talk that much.

If your town uses simplex, (without a repeater) it might come in scratchy. It depends on the power of the radios that they use. Also, you might have poor reception. Try buying a telescoping antenna, or an external antenna. (One that goes on the roof.)

Well if your town is fairly small, you probably wont hear all that much. Fire and Police-wise. You probably won't get much police chases, DUIs, etc.

I line in LEWIS County,KY, and i have a uniden bearcat350 something i think and i am listening inside.

Unfortunatly we don't have any confirmed data for Lewis Co., KY. So, here is your opportunity to start helping us out.

Try these repeater outputs:
155.625 for the Sheriff's Office
155.595 for county Fire Dispatch

155.700 for Vanceburg PD
154.205 for Vanceburg FD

corry: there is also a kentucky forum.... scroll further down the page and you will see it... there are more people from the state logging in there each day...

the thousands of memebers of this site send in confirmed info so all of us can use it.... i work in lexington and am a scannerhead and use this site daily.... these are the freqs i use for lewis county--but i haven't had the chance to visit and confirm them:

Well i have alot of frequencies in actually all 50 in my private bank i am hearing some mor activity but there are time where there is nothing but i still think i should be hearing more than what is going on i dont know what the deal is, maybe i should change places to where i put it, and thanx guys for the frequencies

There are large outside scanner antennas that can greatly increase your reception range. If that isn't feasible, try one of the on-window antennas available for scanners. They usually have a bnc connector that will fitr most scanners. adaptors are available

Earlier you said you were 7 miles from your town. It would seem (unless you are living in a metal building) you should be able to hear just fine with the rubber duck that came with the radio, providing you are listening to the repeater outputs only. You have to figure that your local public safety officials use portables and they have to be able to be used in and around your area. Your county radio system (for the SO for example) has to cover the whole county, including where you live. You need to realize that most of the time, especially in rural areas, the radio is pretty quiet.

well tanks for your guys help....sometimes it is silent for like a half hour or so lool so my county might not be getting that much action i just figured the local cops would mess around, but oh well my scanner is right by the window and i pick up 3 weather things so i figured that was a good reception spot

corryeve: with an external antenna--even a rat shack mag mount mobile outside the window, you should be able to receive many transmissions from mason/ fleming/rowan/carter and greenup counties in kentucky and scioto and adams counties in ohio... i have lists for the counties in kentucky--they haven't been completely confirmed, but you are welcome to try them to se if you hear anything.... you might try some of the marine freqs if you live near the river.... let me know if you want the other lists... just send confirmed info back to the database so all of us can use it....

reception problems...

I use a 9 foot stainless steell whip for my scanner on the peak of the house and I'm 1,800 feet up here on the west end of da U.P. on poverty knob and I hear everyday stations 200 miles away...I also have a uniden 25db pre-amp...Just got the new uniden 296D that i'm trying to "finger out"...Sure is a ***** compared to the rest of the uniden scanners...Bct7,,,etc... :?

Also consider the time frame in which you are hearimg the calls 30 minutes is a long time but not unheard of. my town locks up at 3 am so too hear anything 30 minutes or more is not unheard of.

Also living in the so called boondocks will be a reason you do not hear much i.e. Your town may be that boring. But follow what the others have offered and you should be ok.
