Need Help ! Please

Hello... New guy here.... Just purchased a Uniden BC796D and have been trying to program it for 2 days I purchased and or downloaded all the software listed below. I've opened Excel files, CSV files, created .MAP files etc... and I don't seem to be getting it. Am I correct in assuming that if I can find and .MEM file for my area that it will load, program and cinfigure automatically ? I live in Dripping Springs, Northern Hays County. I commute to Austin daily and am intersted in monitoring DPS and Capitol Police, APD and Hays County Sheriff. Does anyone have a similar.MEM file for this area ? I'd be glad to Paypal for someones time and assistance. Or if you could point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it !

First you can program all the coventional frequencies and alpha tags into the banks of your choice. I'll take another look at Hays County.

Yes, but they aren't that easy to come by. Maybe someone has a 796D file for Hays County.

Use the programs for awhile and see which one you are the most comfortable with and stick with it. First use the one that is the easiest.

It looks as though the San Marcos Edacs frequencies are the ones for you to use, to program the Edacs system.

Program each Talk Group for Hays into the Edacs system.

If I were you, I'd set up a few banks for each thing you're trying to listen to (like each part or your drive). One bank for Hays Conventional stuff (not trunked), one for Hays County EDACS (LCRA), one for Travis Co Conventional, one for Austin P25 Trunked system, and one for State stuff.

I don't know how much background you've had in this stuff, so if I'm too basic for you, sorry. Your scanner can only do one type of trunking per bank. The 796 can do trunked and conventional in a bank though. As the member ahead of me pointed out, there is a database that has all the frequencies that you'll need to program in the radio. In a trunked system, it is also helpful to program alpha tags for the talkgroups. The conventional channels are also handy to have text on so you know who they are.

If you have more questions, please ask - there are many people on here that might could help you out! I have some 796 files for the free version of the software to program the 796, but it's for a larger area. I have Austin in one bank, Seguin, San Marcos, New braunfels, Stockdale, Gonzales and Caldwell Co in another bank, DPS in another bank, and the rest of the banks just have a lot of other stuff from other areas. I'll have to go look for it and see if I think it would be applicable.

Thanks to both of you for your help. I'll take your advice and keep trying to move forward. I can get the frequencies. It's just when it gets to the channels, talk groups, DEC, HEX etc.. it gets a little bumpy. Also the control channels, I haven't seen anywhere were it says to actually "put the control channel hrequency here". And then there's the EDACS Wide, Narrow, the database doesn't really say what kind of system the LCRA system is....

Keep the suggestions and/or files coming... I appreciate the help !

On Austin's P25 system, you only have to put the control channels in the 796. The LCRA system is a EDACS WIDE in the 796. The main thing to do it to put the frequencies in order as listed on the EDACS stuff. The motorola channel order doesn't matter. Just put all the frequencies under the main frequency entry area, and make sure "trunking" is turned on for that channel.


Talkgroups are usually entered in decimal. EDACS have two different one, decimal and AFS. AFS is nice if you really want to make the most out ot EDACS listening, but decimal is easier for a beginner. Your scanner can swap back and forth without a problem. Maybe try decimal for now, and AFS later.
