Need help programing pro164 please

Hi I'm new to all the new scanners lll in used to the older ones and I miss listing to the police and fire department and I went to radioshack and the guy told me to get the pro-164 and ill be able to listen to any thing I want so u got the scanner and the cord and subscribed to R.R. and I put all the codes in anf now I dont know what to do

Well, he didn't quite tell you the right thing. You can listen to anything that is analog. You won't be able to listen to any trunk system or channel/frequency that is in digital mode.

What specific systems or agencies are you trying to listen to on the scanner? Do they use digital or P25? If it does, this scanner won't do it for you unfortunately.

You are still able to use it for other types of scanning. There is a specific Wiki here on RadioReference that may help you with this radio at:

It says that the scanner is a triple truncking I don't know what that means tho lol and I'm trying to listen to the police and fire in mesa tempe and phoenix

Triple trunking is a Marketing term by Radio Shack. It just means it will monitor Motorola, LTR and GE/Ericsson (EDACS) Trunking systems. I am getting ready to move to Arizona and have been doing some research on the area. With that scanner there is stuff you can listen to.. But, what it is you want to listen to will not be possible. You are in need of a Digital scanner. If you choose to stick with Radio Shack, find a store that won't BS you like the one who sold you that. And you will want to purchase Pro-106 (Handheld) or the Pro-197 (Base/Car)... Also, Uniden has some model's that will do just as well for you.. I just prefer RS/GRE America.. Hope this helps a bit.

Well, as Tipster mentioned, it is simply a way for them to say it can listen to different analog trunked systems. It is unfortunately not capable of monitoring digital systems. I would take it back to RS and ask for my money to be applied to a PRO-106. Then you will have purchased the radio you really need to listen to digital systems. Having said that, the 106 is definitely a lot more expensive.

I'd take that radio back to RS and get my money back, however I would definately not buy the 106 or any digital scanner from that store. The idiot that sold you that analog scanner in an area that is heavily digital was just trying to make a sale at the expense of an unknowing customer. I'm sure the store was out of 106's otherwise you would have been sold that (higher profit/commission for the goon). That store doesn't deserve your business if that's what happened.
