Need Help Selecting a New Scanner in Yorktown, VA

I had been using a PRO-2006 at home and a PRO-2026 at work. Well...neither of those are worth a hoot now because they aren't trunk tracking.

I've read a lot of the comparisons and information on the site here and quite frankly, since I haven't been keeping up with technology, it has my head spinning.

Basically I just need some recommendations on which way to go here given my listening area. Do I need APCO-25 ready or can I get away with something less? I was looking at the BC-796D for the home and maybe something hand held for the office.

Williamsburg just joined the system with there first ID's this week.

The BC796D will work fine on the new system and all trunking systems in this area. The BC296D is the matching hand held. Another matching set which will also work on your system and others in the area is the Pro-96 handheld and Pro-2096 base/mobile. Uniden also has a brand new hand held, BCD396T which will also scan your system. I think these 5 scanners is all that will work on your system at this time.

I echo Franks welcome. I guess the main question is how do you tend to scan? In your vehicle or at home? I noted that the scanners you are currently using are base/mobil units versus a hand held.

There are two scanners that are base mobil, the BC 796 and the RS 2096. The other scanners Frank mentioned are hand helds. For trunked systems, lean toward the BCD396T. It has a dynamic memory so you can have more than ten trunked systems. In the Yorktown area there are more than ten trunked systems.

The forum has numeous threads on the capabilities of each scanner.

One thing to keep in mind, is the scanner must receive a 9600 Baud system. If the sale person can't (or won't) answer the question, don't buy. Be prepared for sticker shock, the scanners that can receive digital are not the cheap ones. Figure aound 400 or more dollars.

Another thing to consider is do you listen to things like MILAIR? Make sure the scanner can pickup everything you want to listen to.

Thanks for the reply's guys! You confirmed my worst fear.... MONEY . Most of my scanning is at home or at my office. The only mobile scanning I usually do is for NASCAR and I use a RELM 2000 for that. I guess, the whole issue becomes the trunk tracking and the need for digital capability. I have got to start saving money .
