I purchased my father a Sony Mini H-Fi Shelf system MHC-EC909iP for Christmas and he loves it, but he Fm reception is very poor.

It basically has a single wire for the FM and a loop thing for the AM, both connected with a propitiatory plug that looks somewhat like a computer fan plug.

I have been racking my brain trying to figure out a solution. To make matters worse, he lives in a house with a tin roof.

It picks up most of the stations he wants, but there is static. I have been looking at aftermarket antennas but they are not looking very promising, especially considering that there is just the proprietary connector.

I am thinking of just maybe splicing a long piece of speaker wire onto it, running it out the window and anchoring it up in a tree. Any thoughts on that?

Or how about this Terk Tower Amplified indoor AM/FM antenna at Crutchfield.com

I wonder if that will help or even connect to his one single wire antenna.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

That is a proprietary plug on the Sony unit and at this time there are no 3rd party solutions for antennas because it isn't possible to connect one to the receiver.

The best thing you can do is to place the unit as high at your location as you can. If in a room, as high as possible. An outer wall will work better than an inner wall and in front of a window would be better. If possible, attach the wire FM antenna so it is vertical coming up from the plug. If the wire is not 28-32" long, add a little wire to the end to make it that length.

Best of luck with your reception.

I have one of those Terk Towers and it sets in the closet because my old trusty Archer Color Supreme lll rabbitear antenna pulls 'em in way better with the whips extended to 12" each. I can switch directions too and it's kinda a nostalgia piece so not too ugly:) try to get one-they work fantastic with FM!
