Depends what band you're starting with. If you're using VHF/UHF, you can get a mobile antenna, a magnet mount, and use a coffee can for your antenna, There are also many wire antennas you can build for HF and use indoors, and nobody will see them. Check out the ARRL website for some books on the subject of stealth antennas.
Have fun!

Attic space available?

For HF you can run a longwire around the attic and use a transmatch to tune it.

For VHF/UHF a magnet mount placed on a cookie sheet works fine.

Oh - what cool folks you have!!

Have you got a TV antenna mounted outside the house to the wall or chimney? - ask them if you can change the TV support pole, then choose an antenna thats suitable to be mounted to the same pole ( e.g. higher up the pole, or strung from it across the garden to a tree ....... you're just going to have to be creative.

Have a garden - what about a tower in the garden, or are they likely to say "NO" to that as well.

Mag mounts on file cabinets and central a/c units work. Also you could experiment with glass-mount antennas on your upstairs windows,or use the attic as mentioned? :)
