Request #14668 Asking a few questions about the Uniden Bearcat SDS200 scanner.

Hello, from Ron Kolesar, better known by Amateur Radio Station Call Sign of,
    KR3DOG.
I am blind and through Scanner Master, I had purchased the following p25
    truncated increpted scanner the
    Uniden Bearcat SDS200.
Even though as a blind consumer, I ddpely appreciate that it has actual
physical nobs and a telephone or calculator like touchable keypad.
But this unit is still not blind friendly.
Scanner Master gave me your contact to hopefully over come some of the
difficulties and maybe try to make your products and scanner masters producs
    more accessible to blind customers.
I originally purchase the unit because I have a old from 1982 regency eight
    channel chrystal scanner.
Since they are installing p25 truncated increpted towers in my area, I
thought I'd try one out to see if it would be blind friendly or not.
Now I realize that since you're sighted you can see the LCD display and you
can receive your confirmational feedback from watching the LCD with your
    eyes.
I do not have the;luxury and I have to retreave my confirmational feedback
    via my ears.
  • Another good example of this is this.
  • You're reading this message via your eyes since you can see your monitor.
  • My computer is reading this information to me via artificial sppech since my eyes don't work and I need my feedback via my ears.
Just like my digital cable converter box and my Ham radio base station the
    Kenwood model TM-V71A.
Because I do have audio output I can independely program and enjoy my cable
TV and my responsibilities as Pennsylvania West County Emergency Com-Tre
    Manager.
Is there any way of describing the layout of the front of the new scanner
and the buttons functions and how to control them from a blind person's
    point of view?
Because I really don't want to return it and want to learn how to use not
only the simply beginner features for programming my new scannener with the
local frequencies in Erie county and beyond, but to learn the more advance
features to take total control and full enjoyment of all of the features
that this unit offers to me.
The only thing I don't like, and I know this is because of all of the crack
    pots out there.
Even though my new scanner is a up to date P25 truckcated increpted scanner,
sadly our Pennsylvania State Police AKA PSP frequencies will still be
    scramboled.
So, via the firm ware that is the internal instructions to any electronic
product, is there a way to add voice output and or to help blind customers
    to use this radio?
Because I deeply appreciat the point that it has touchable nobs and a
touchable telephone/calculator keypad, but without the confirmational
    feedback, I don't know what I'm doing.
In short, excuse the pun, but I'm flying blind.
I deeply would appreciate working with you to make your units blind friendly
if you are willing to do so?
My contact information is as follows:
    Ron Kolesar
    Snail-mail address:
    9910 E. Peach St.
    Girard, PA. 16417
    E-mail address:
    kolesar16417@roadrunner.com
Phone number say any time after 09:00 EST and if I don't answer, please
leave a voice message, I try to answer my voice mail as soon as I get back
in the door from any appointment I need to go out to.
But my phone number is at:
    814-774-5709.
So with that said, I don't really want to return the scanned since I have
roughly $700.00 invested into the radio, but if I can use the unit, I might
as well return the unit so I can get my money refunded back to me.
But I will wait to hear from you with your advice first before deciding on
    returning the product.
    Very Thankfully Yours,
    Mr. Ronald C. Kolesar

I have a good friend who works at the Brighthouse Networks (Time Warner) call center in Clearwater, FL who is blind and uses a voice-to-text program when working on the phones with customers. I believe it is called JAWS. It tells him (by modulated voice) everything that is displayed on his computer monitor. He has the JAWS headset in one ear and the customer headset in the other ear and he doesn't miss a beat. I wonder if one of the virtual display functions on some 3rd party software for the SDS scanners would accommodate this software. Not too sure about that, but it might be something to investigate. Just a suggestion. Good luck on that!

And, welcome to Radio Reference! Tons of information here.

Hey tailgater kf4anc DE KR3DOG.Nice to meet a fellow ticket holder. Where is your city in Ohio located at. I'm originally from West side Cleveland.
I don't think JAWS would work. We need a speech chip like what is in our watches and or like what is in Specturm's new World box version 2 and I might be a beta tester for the version 3 coming out later this year. What's going to be cool with version 3, is that the remotes will have a push to talk button on them and if you press and hold in on the button, we'll be able to give both our TV sets and the cable boxes voice commands. No, the designers of the scanner has a fantastic start with actual physical touchable nobs and a touchable keypad, now if we only could receive the voice output conformational feedback since we can't see the LCD display, we would have the perfect world.I'm going to wait until roughly Tuesday which will be a week of owning this unit then I probably sadly will be returning it.
So, if anyone can help me to program this radio and is in the states or near North west Pennsylvania and can stop by, I'd deeply appreciate learning how to program this radio.
My phone number is in the letter, but it is also once again 814-774-5709 EST. If anyone can help me to program in the scanner I'd deeply appreciate it since I don't want to return it.
Very Thankfully Yours.

Yeah I am in Fairborn, a suburb of Dayton, in Greene County/Montgomery County, basically on the line in the northeast quadrant. Having someone visit and program your scanner for you would be a better request in the Ohio section of the forums. I'm sure there is someone close by that would be willing to help in the Cleveland area. But, with all of the changes and updates we have to do to stay in the digital game, it is only a matter of time before you would need to make changes, additional systems, sites, and TGs added, etc, that would be difficult in your circumstance. I wish you luck in your endeavor and hope you find a tool to better help you with your hobby. 73s
