• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

First of all...yes, I have read the user manual, I have searched RR, and I have searched online, and I can not find the answer to my question.

I recently obtained a used 5100, model 242-5117-660GS4, software version 4.4.16.

According to what I can find online, and the previous owner, the radio is supposed to have 512 channels available, and be FPP-capable. However the dial only rotates to 16 (it does not just keep spinning, like some Motorola radios I am familiar with), and I can not figure out how to create more zones in the memory. Presumably the 512 channels are not somehow hidden within the controls as they appear. The ABC switch seems to do nothing (how can I program that? Not listed in the manual either!)

The radio is very easy to program individual channels via FPP, however I have tried for hours to get it to create a new zone, and I am stumped.

In order to enable more zones it has to be set up in the radio by using the software. It looks like there is one zone of 16 FPP channels. The PCC as EFJ calls it you need is 2.10.2. It requires windows XP or greater on your computer and a programming cable that is avalible on Ebay usually from Kawa. Once you read the radio with the software you can create more zones and see what options are available.

FPP is a limited function on all FPP radios, Motorola and EFJ. You can't set up scanlists or zones, and you can't add channels. What you can do is reprogram existing channels in existing zones. To get to the "other" stuff you must have the software available.

My apologies for not posting a follow-up to this...

An EFJ dealer confirmed that the software needed to be accessed via computer in order to complete the setup I needed. He took care of it for me, and now the radio meets my needs.
