Does anyone know if you can use the rear 232 serial port on the 996 to power the information to the rh96 instead of using the front data link. If so what pins do u use? Many thanks

No, you use the connector on the front of the radio (or logically the side for handheld).

Well now, I guess I'm a little confused. You guys are saying you can "power" the information from the rear port? There isn't a hardware method to control the power on the RH, unless I misinterpret the OP.

Ok, from the information that you all have given me so far is that pin # 2 is rec data and pin #3 is transmit with pin 5 being ground on the 232 side. Now i am guessing that the ring on the 1/8" is ground and now the problem is to figure out the tip and ring 2 for in and out. I will try tomarrow and let you know what happens. Thanks for the help

Thank you all for your help, IT DOES WORK!!!!! As you all have said, lines 2,3&5 are the key.
Using the 232 out of the back, connect line 2 to the middle ring of the 1/8" jack.
connect line 3 to the tip of the jack
and connect line 5 to the ring or ground of the jack.

Again thanks for your help.

This is how we ended up using the 232 connection in the helicopter

I assume this is for WBAL TV's aircraft? Nice work on the rs232 engineering. That looks like a much more stable connection than the front connector, and allows you to have a dual-control head operation to boot!

Yes, this is WBAL's new Hi-Def helicopter. We hope to have it done by the 15 th of January so I can bring it back home. You can see both old and new side by side.

Well we are getting closer to getting the helicopter finished. The BC-RH96 are installed and connected. The 232 connection works a lot better than the front connection on the 996. I will show you all the finished product when we are done. Again, thanks to you all for your help.

OK let me rephrase that question, what pins are used for the GPS. I could be possible to make a break out that would control the head and the GPS from the back.
