• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I am assuming you mean your radios are not narrowband capable, and you do not want to replace them?

If you have a license (Itinerant or otherwise) you can modify it for narrowband and have your radios reprogrammed if capable. But again, I guess I need to assume you are asking because they are not.

The only "business" you can use GMRS for, is a family business, where all operators are family members and at least one has a GMRS license. (If you had an Itinerant license, this is where you may as well stick with what you had...versus changing only to pay for a new license and radios). So, again, if I assume your club is not family, and this is a business venture. You could not use GMRS. If it was not business (IE make money - for profit - paid to do it) you could possibly use it, but ALL members would need to hold licenses.

Getting too technical? You may want to share some more info. What kind of event, is the club a non-profit, what kind of radios do you have now, what frequency, what type of license do you have (Itinerant or coordinated....whats your call sign), etc.

I think myself and others can offer some suggestions.

In GMRS you do not have to use repeaters, there are low power channels, and high power channels, plus repeater pairs. If you were using only handhelds before and that worked, then you don't need a repeater anyway.

There is MURS (VHF - 2 watts) for business or personal, no individual license required. Also, FRS, which share some GMRS low power channels, but is licensed by rule as well (no indiv license) but on FRS you have people trying to use it for business, kids, legit people, etc. But, there are 14 channels and lots of privacy codes.

So, tell us more and we'll try to help.

Well, I guess that's a tad bit more info. I think the suggestion, in lieu of answers, is probably FRS for ease of acquiring and matching radios to use as a group, or MURS VHF if you need a little more range outdoors.

GMRS would require each member of the club to get a $75 license from the FCC. You have the option to uses simplex channels or repeaters. You can mix GMRS and FRS radios together since FRS 1-7 are part of the pool of channels available to GMRS license holders, but the GMRS users can use 5 watts to the FRS 1/2 watt of power.
