• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Not entirely sure if this is the correct spot to post this question or not. I am on a Bail Enforcement (bounty hunter) team here in Mi. We mostly operate in the Metro Detroit area but sometimes find ourselves further out (ie: Burton, Saginaw, Grand Rapids) and also have another team in the Grand Rapids area that we regularly communicate with. We have been using the Zello app recently for comms as we sometimes are operating in different areas and have team members spread out. This app has proven to be a pain and sore topic of discussion with the team. With that being said I am trying to find our next best thing for comms. We have looked into Rapid Radios and Apache2way radios but not sure what the best option is. We have also considered reaching out and attempting to get on a business band as we a are a licensed Private Security/PI company and could utilize this system for more than just Bounty hunting work.

I just don't know which direction to go and get the best "bang for our buck" with comms. Our main focus is on:
  1. Range
  2. Stable connections that wont drop
  3. Radios with a wide variety of accessories (shoulder mic, earpieces)
  4. Mobile radios for vehicles.

I would have 2 options. One for general use where cell service operates for Wide Area Comms. This would be a PTT Over Cell (like Rapid radios or Global-PTT or similiar).

Then, for areas where there is no cell, I would have a set of simplex portable radios to use when you are all off LTE and near each other.

Alternatively, you could lease/rent talk time on a wide area radio trunking system, but I am not familiar with providers/coverage in that area. often the wide area systems do not work indoors, so we see folks moving away from them.

Wide area is a per month per device and simplex/local comms are generally a pay once per 10 years kind of deal.
