I plan on passing through Pennsylvania later this year and would like to program the State Police into my PRO-96. I have browsed this site and cannot determine if PA operates trunked or not. What system/freqs should I load for PSP?

The Pennsylvania State Police are still on VHF High Band. The frequencies are correctly listed on the RR Database. Just click on RR Database, then State of Pennsylvania, then Pennsylvania State Police. When in PA you will see 800 mhz antennas on the troop cars, but they are used for MDT's. If you search the PA forum you will learn about the delays in the controversial OpenSky system, which will be unmonitorable by current scanners. Also, if you are monitoring the PA Turnpike on 159.045 and 159.075 don't program the listed PL's as they are used on the inputs and not broadcast by the repeaters (last I checked).

Turnpike

So if I load 154.045 and 159.075 will I be good if I stay on the Pike? That's really all I'm looking for and it would be great if I could get away with only loading two freqs for the whole state

PA Turnpike Frequencies

The main frequencies would be 159.045 and 159.075. These alternate as you travel down the Pike. I would also program 159.00, a car-to-car simplex channel that might be active at incidents. Finally, it might be a good idea to program 154.755, pl 186.2, which is the statewide mobile-to-mobile channel and might be used on the Pike or by aircraft.

You will hear state troopers, maintenance, toll plazas and tow trucks as well as EMS units on the main channels. Dispatch in all areas identifies as "Highspire", the main Turnpike headquarters near Harrisburg.

155.460 and 151.490 might also be useful. These are state police tactical frequencies and are sometimes used to talk to aircraft while speed clocking on the highways. If your scanner has ctcss use 186.2.
