This "may" be the part you need:

ALPS RK0971112 (from the service manual, Section 6 VR Unit)

You might search for the part, or the specifications and try to find a similar part.

Looks similar. Not sure about the resistance taper code. Check the resistance, mechanical specs etc..

Digikey or Mouser would be a place to buy small quantities.

Otherwise, buy something that fits and wire it in neatly.

Have you tried cleaning the control with 90% alcohol, solvent or control cleaner/lube?

Also Jameco & Newark are good parts sources (I've found Jameco to have the best prices, Digi-key to have the biggest selection [but prices slightly higher] with Jameco running a close second on selection size)/

That's good because you can measure the resistance and determine if it is a linear or audio taper pot.

...or add a switch externally in parallel with the existing bad switch? Might not look nice, but might be less expensive / easier?

Obviously that is an option, once again I just thought with the age of this rig I could possibly find a donor candidate out there.

ebay Israel and Cyprus seem to sell parts radios that appear to have gone through several wars. You might find one there.

I bought a clean donor candidate IC-970 (JDM) radio directly from Japan and decided I would rather fix its several problems than use it for a parts donor. So you have the risk of having two radios to fix!

If you cannot find a push on/off style volume/switch, consider just getting one that turns full left for off before drilling extra holes or tearing up the radio. Nobody will really notice.
