Looking for a portable antenna that will mount on a SDS100 to monitor a P25 system around 30 miles away. I have a Remtronix 820S, but it's not cutting it. What are your recommendations?

I have 3 different Remtronix antennas for my SDS100 (7/8/9 monobander, 7/8/9 + UHF, and the tri-band 843s) the 820s is the best of the three for 7/8/9 by about 3dBm over the dual bander and 5dBm over the tri-bander. I haven't found anything more effective than the 820s for portable use on 7/8/9. For that kind of monitoring, I think you're going to need a true mobile or base antenna.

Perhaps a Smiley or other higher-quality makers have an antenna that would improve your reception.

You need to look seriously at an external antenna, if there's any way to do so. Or, try getting a Yagi you can mount inside your house as high as possible in the attic or near a window.

I'm assuming he's talking about a 700/800 system, because of the antenna model mentioned, and because it's required in 700 and de rigeur in 800 most people conflate 7/8 with P25.

P25 is real nice on VHF conventional, too. I wish there were more of it on VHF and UHF.

You're going to need an outdoor antenna, perhaps a yagi pointing towards the direction of the (assuming) 700/800mhz systems 30 miles away. Also without knowing what topography is like between you and the destination tower(s) it's uncertain you'll get any reliable pick up at all. 700/800 doesn't propagate as far as VHF/UHF. Also it may help to experiment with the different filter settings

Listing the freqs of interest may yield better recommendations. P25 does not mean anything.
Yeah sorry about that, here is what I am looking at

Unfortunately I cannot attach an outdoor antenna in this rental. The tower locations are just outside of my location, maybe 5 miles from where the circle ends, I am in Palm Coast.
Here are the two tower locations:
he has mentioned Georgetown and Austin TX.
might be that.
I moved to FL now, but I picked the wrong county to live in as they went encrypted, I looked at old data and then found out they went encrypted :(

I'm in Flagler county now, so looking to monitor Daytona Beach systems, seems to be about 25-30 miles away, flat land here in FL. I can pick it up from my location inside the house, but it is very staticky and only hear a few transmissions.

If that's all your trying to pull in, a Yagi or a Moxon may yield better results. I have this Yagi and it helps with what I need it for. Free returns on Scamazon

Also built a diy Moxon which does pretty good. Both this and Yagi are directional.

If you can't even temporarily clamp something onto a balcony rail or such, your best bet may be a decent magnet mount scanner antenna on a cheap steel pizza pan or a yagi attached to a broomstick handle. It's sure not the best installation, but it'll be more gain than a duck.

Ok I can order that and point it south of me. I'll have to rig up some sort of pole and base so I can put it inside..
Is there just not a good attachable antenna? I don't care if it's 3 ft tall, just makes it more portable.

I can probably do that but won't be able to drill into the wall for the cable. Landlord will call the Portuguese mafia..
