Need some explanations

I was just down in Mexico and took along a Pro-92 I picked up to look for LTR systems there. I found a number of active frequencies but encountered what appeared to me to be some strange going-ons. Maybe someone can explain these for me.

First off- I found that a number of different radios were all using the same unit ID [areacode-home freq-unit ID]. I haven't seen this on any of the units here in NJ- is this a usual practice around the US?

Secondly- at times, while one unit was talking, the unit ID codes would flip back and forth between 2 or 3 ids- as if there were 2 or 3 users all keyed up at the same time and the system was reading all of the id's one after another. Has anyone seen this before?

And lastly - on any given frequency I would see a unit's ID number and home frequency change from transmission to transmission. That is- a unit say numbered 0-003-01 on the first transmisson would show up as 0-007-03 on the comeback- same speaker, same frequency different ID's. Is this weird or what?

Any ideas?

Also- am I right in saying that if 2 signals have different areacodes they are on different systems? So that a radio iding as 0-xxx-yy is on a different system than one iding as 1-xxx-zz.

I think this normal is for LTR - the protocol doesn't really support the concept of a radio id. That was part of the reason for the many LTR follow-ons like Passport, Multi-net, and so on. The weirdness you describe may be that the system isn't LTR but one of the LTR extensions above.

When you see the ID's jumping around it is because there are other users keying up and being bumped to other repeaters. The data stream reflects this on the home repeater so that other radios will know to switch channels.
