• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Guys,

Trying to get a 'communications sound' page going on my own website. I need 5-second stereo .wav files of what ESK sounds like and what the ProVoice 'hash' sounds like on an analog receiver.

I've got no one here in NJ using ESK, and since I don't own a laptop it's damn near impossible to get a good recording of the locals on the Atlantic County wide-area that are using ProVoice currently.

1000x TIA for anyone that helps! You will get proper credit on the site when the page is done...

The quality of some of those samples leaves a bit to be desired, and he doesn't have the 2 I'm asking for...

You're in luck! I'm going to be in San Antonio tonight so I'll try and get a soundbyte from the Bexar Co. system. Not sure if ESK is on so I'll try and scan the system to find out. I'll get a soundbyte of the control channel too if you need that.

Where are the audio samples on your website? It seems you don't have a link to any on the main URL. Still working on it?

I see you do MARS/CAP mods. Is there one for the VXA-700 HT yet?

Oh, sorry about that! The hyperlink in my signature goes direct to my Altec Communications page. The radio sounds are on the personal side of my website here: http://www.w2sjw.com/comsounds.htm

Let me check on that radio for you...

Well I'm in a hotel on my iPAQ PDA typing this. So far NADA on the system. If I manually tune thru the freqs I hear ProVoice but nothing analog at all. I did get a wav of the control channel.

San Antonio EDACS CC

*edit* I'm back home now.

I scanned the system for over an hour the other night, and only noticed one i-call radio ID display but there was no audio at all. Nothing analog was heard. Even when manually tuning thru the frequencies, therefore not sure if ESK was on or off.

Are you able to tell by listening to the CC?

Hi, KB9UKD (Gary) here. Comparing the sound samples by ear to what I already have on my http://kb9ukd.com/digital samples page, I can detect no audible difference between these formats...

ProVoice sounds the same as what I've been hearing on a system in MI since about 1999 or 2000 (before ProVoice was in use?) and is believed to be AEGIS encryption (already have a sample). Not saying your sample is not ProVoice, just that I can't distinguish a difference by ear.

Also the ESK control channel sounds just like a regular control channel to me....each control channel sounds slightly different when there is voice traffic assigned, etc...

So, if you guys can just verify that you KNOW that these samples were made from ProVoice (not AEGIS) and ESK (not just EDACS typical) systems, I'll modify the text of my descriptions to say something like "ProVoice sounds very similar" and credit you if you want. I haven't kept up recently with such things, so I don't know who's got what and I don't mean to question your earlier statements...but would like a hearty nod to the affirmative if you are positive of what was recorded.

(If folks were looking for bit-level decode differences, that wasn't the point of my site.)

Thanks!

Gary

The New Orleans system is ProVoice according to the RR data.

http://www.radioreference.com/modules.php?name=TRSDB&sid=156

I was there with my scanner, and saved the wav file onto my PDA.

Same with the SAT system. I saved some audio of the CC. Not sure if ESK was in use or not but I did have the system programmed into my Uniden BC246T. It never stopped on an analog conversation while I was there. I did manually tune thru the frequencies and did hear some analog voice but when scanning it never stopped on anything.

Fortunately for me the local county system is EDACS and ProVoice capable but I've never heard it in use. No telling what the future holds though because I have overheard some radio techs on their TG discussing ProVoice.

I was told an ESK encoded EDACS control channel is supposed to sound like a buzzsaw. I can't confirm this (because we have no users utilizing it here in NJ), so I'm not 100% certain.

Anyone that can confirm that it sounds no different to a standard wide-band EDACS CC will put a quick end to the need for the sound :)

Are you talking about the sound made when when a PTT request is successful (similar to the NEXTEL sound below)?

If so, I'd like that sound as well!

Ok, couple comments here.

First, the control channel example from the San Antonio system is not ESK - San Antonio turns ESK on and off every once in a while - the system has had ESK turned off for the past few months. So, it's a regular Wide Area EDACS control channel for the time being.

If you are accustomed to listening to control channels - and you can tell the difference between an Motorola Type I, Type II, and Smartzone control channel, then you can tell the difference between an EDACS, and EDACS ESK control channel. It is subtle, but you can tell.

So, you'll need someone to send you a recording of an EDACS ESK control channel in FL - they are the only folks using ESK right now, other than the DFW Airport I believe. In addition though, the system in Florida is also rolling out extended addressing, which might change the sound some.

If SATX turns on ESK, I'll send some recordings, otherwise, it's just another Wide Area ProVoice system.
