Neighbors worry about church plans

SHARON - The Unitarian Church of Sharon’s decision to house a cell phone transmitter inside its steeple, pending Zoning Board approval, has angered neighbors over health risks, property devaluation, and the potential loss of a historic bell.

Last month’s hearing on the request will continue at the board’s Wednesday, Jan. 14 meeting.

The residents and politicians in Sharon have a long history of being anti cell phone. They've litigated and lost a number of times. They much prefer to have cell phone towers in neighboring communities so as not to risk the property values in their town. Typical NIMBY attitude.

The residents of Sharon have a long history of being a dry town too. That is until recently. You couldn't buy booze there, no matter what store or establishment.

There are more cell sites located in church towers than most people even know about. They can be disguised very well, to the point that you couldn't even tell. Example, First Congregational Church in Rockland center has a cell site, and if you didn't know what you were looking for, you'd miss it, blends in so well.

I just read somewhere else that one church even had an antenna on the back of the cross on the steeple. I really don't know why they are complaining, for aesthetics its much better than having a huge tower in town. Maybe they are receiving signals from above ;)
