I just got the 396 a couple of day ago. I notice when I charge it, the display never reads past Normal Recharging. The manual said it sould go to charge complete. Also the batteries get very warn, almost hot. Is anyone else experiencing this? The batters are new GP 2300, the scanner is also new.

:( Yes this is normal for this scanner sorry to say, it charges the batteries for 14 hours and then says charging complete, then if you unplug the scanner and use it on batteries for even 5 minutes and plug the scanner back in the scanner starts to charge the batteries again for another 14 hour cycle ans so on. Really sad that a top of the line scanner and very expensive scanner does this, all that heat in the batteries and also heating up the scanner, something has to go sooner or later.

your best bet would be to charge the batteries outside the scanner in a charger.
I think most 396T users do it that way.

I was getting poor run times by just charging my 246 with the AC adapter. What I do now is keep 4 rechargeables handy..and I use two of them at a time. However, I flipped the switch on the scanner to alkaline, so the AC adapter will not charge the batteries when it's plugged in. A bit of a process, but it saves charging time and probably lengthens the life of the batteries.

I thought we were talking about the uniden 396t scanner, now you bring up the 246 scanner, who asked about the 246 scanner. This is a totallly different scanner, please don't hi-jack posts that have nothing to do with what the person who started this post wants information about.

Because both scanners suffer from the same battery issues and yorkphotog's solution is equally applicable to the OP's 396. That's why. Jeebus.
