Hi! I hope someone can help me with an issue. Just installed my new scanner (upgrade so I can get p25) and it's a bdc996p2. I have a nice antenna on a 60' mast that picks up a lot for me, but my counties p25 system. I have spent days trying to get the system to work. Applied system via free scan and also pro scan, I Just can't hear anything. I have tried everything and really need assistance. I am in Jamestown NY and looking at the Chautauqua County p25 Apco system.

You didn't need to buy the upgrade, it comes with the radio, hence P2 (for Phase 2 capable P25 radio) at the end of it's name.

the radio might be having trouble with the system being a simulcast one.

the radio is an upgrade, not a P2 upgrade.

If you press HOLD and turn the large knob to scroll through the frequencies, do you see any bars on 154.785? Any indication on the screen like SYSID?
How far from a tower site are you? Have you tried the antenna that came with the radio? Sometimes too strong a signal is not good.

I have full bars.. no indications but NFN. I am 21 miles from it.

depending on direction, you probably live many more miles away from a tower.
so it might be the true distance is the problem, perhaps a drive into the county with the radio ?

If you live right in Jamestown and your antenna is at the top of a 60' tower, it's highly possible (near 100%) that you are picking up more than one site of that simulcast system. Probably need a little less antenna.

I thought that.. I'm about 20 miles from the tower.. put on the stock antenna and nothing changed. Just stressed that it's so complicated and with a radio built for it to boot.

What you are most likely experiencing with the Chautauqua County Public Safety System is a phenominon known as simulcast distortion, perhaps the most discussed issue on these forums. In a simulcast system, a site is not a single transmitter at a specific location, but rather a collection of transmitters spread out over a certain area that all transmit on the same frequency at the same time. It's all those signals coming to your scanner at the same time that cause most scanners to lock up, stutter, miss transmissions, etc. Ultimately the only scanners designed to mitigate the effects of simulcast distortion are the Uniden SDS100 (portable) or SDS200 (base). Yes they are the most expensive but they do the job right. There are a number of workarounds for other scanners mentioned in the wiki I linked but they work in very few cases

I am looking at the license and it is a very low power system.
WQVE292 this license shows additional frequencies, 151.15250000 , 151.28750000 , 151.31000000 , 151.38500000 and 153.92000000 and WQUZ436 this license has the frequencies you have in the scanner.
