Hi guys

So I got my call sign and i want to change it. How in the world do i do it. I went onto FCC vanity call sign, but could not log in using my license FRN number because I do not have a password for it. So i registered and they gave me an extra FRN number. I requested a password change for my original FRN number...now I guess they are gonna call me sometime this week. Wow didn't think it was a difficult thing to do.

You should have gotten (will get) a letter with CORES (COmmission REgistration System) that will have your password. If you do not have that, you can download the CORES Registration Update/Change For (FCC Form 161) from the FCC homepage http;//www.fcc.gov/formpage.html (it also can be requested by phone or fax). If your forget your password you will have to contact, you will have to contact the CORES Administrator, and provide them with your PIN, taxpayer ID number, along with your FRN, to obtain the password hint. They can only give you password hint, or reset your password. For security reasons new passwords are mailed to your official address of record. If you have any questions call the CORES ADMI 877-480-3201. (The following was taken from my CORES Letter).

I had run into a problem when they first issued my License -- they had my address wrong -- so I had to get mine changed even before I got any of my "Official" mailings. I was able to reset my password online, and if I recall it was not all that hard. You do not need to get a new FRN, but simply reset your password.

There is also another option on getting a new call sign, and that is going through a service, like W5YI, it does cost something like $50, while the FCC is (whatever it is now). My father went though W5YI, while I went through the FCC. When I did I had my password written down, and it was not that hard. So if you do want to go through the FCC, all you need to do is either call them, (or email) and get them to reset your password, once you get in, I would change it, write it down, and you should have no other problems.

One hint about changing your call, make sure 1) the call you want is valid, 2) that you have the right group for your license class, 3) that it conforms with the license structure. I used to get a laugh at one website that used to list the "rejected" calls, where one time someone had requested NCC1701 for a call, or VA3DER, while they look cool, neither are valid. That or the ones would put "ANY" (as in any 1x2, or 2x1). Have fun, and good luck.

You may have all the answers you need by now, but just so you know, if you look up your call sign on QRZ.com you can access your FCC pages. Your FCC page shows that the "Red Light Review" was completed today 2/12/2015. It doesn't show which of the three you applied for was assigned, but it's usually the first one on the list, that is not already in use or incorrect in some way. Your first and second choice doesn't show as being assigned, but your third choice does.

I'm curious as to how you managed to obtain an FRN but have no password for it. When I took my initial Technician test, I registered in CORES and obtained my FRN before I took the exam.

I know some VECs will allow people to take the exam with an SSN only and in these cases, I assume the FRN and password are assigned by the FCC.

Well I took my test and when I was done i needed to file out a paper and put my SSN on it. Many weeks later after they put my call sign on the fcc site I got my FRN. then another week I got my paper license and the fcc gave me my password.

There's a valuable lesson in this for future readers of this thread. It really helps to have your FRN in hand before you take your first Amateur test. It will prevent delays in getting your ticket, and if you so desire, applying for a vanity call.

Applying for an FRN is quick and painless so there's really no reason not to get it done as soon as you know you'll be taking the exam.

In my case, I am finally getting around to doing what I promised myself 50 years ago. I'll be taking the Tech exam this Wednesday. I've had an FRN for over a year thanks to some other licensing so it's just one less bit to paperwork to be handled the night of the test.

I actually got my call sign in two weeks. The VEC told me and the other people after passing the test that all we needed to do was put our name, address and SSN down. We all did that. No body had an FRN number because the VEC told us that we will get one once we get all callsign and all we had to do was check fcc or qrz.com for any update.

Agreed. The VEC I'm involved with won't let anyone take the exam unless they have an FRN already in hand. If someone shows up at the test site without one, we will assist them in obtaining it using their cell phone or a tablet belonging to one of the VEs.

Because we test on Saturday mornings and the exam results are usually electronically transmitted to the FCC the same day, we've had new call signs appear in the ULS as soon as the following Monday.

Why every VEC doesn't do it this way, I have no idea. I've read many forum posts about people taking the test and waiting several weeks for their call sign to appear in the database. My club even received an e-mail from a ham in Northern California wondering about why his wife hadn't received her call sign. It turned out he had us confused with a club having a similar name, but with a little research, we were able to put him in touch with the proper VEC and he was able to resolve the situation.
