We've noticed a huge increase in rants and negative posts that revolve around agencies going to encryption due to the broadcasting of scanner audio on the internet. It's now worn out and continues to be the same recycled rants. These rants hijack the threads and derail the conversation. They no longer have a place anywhere on this forum other than in the designated threads in the Rants forum in the Tavern.

I ran across a new (issued in May) license for CMPD ... WQEX452.

The license covers 23 trunked frequencies in the 866-868 segment, at the same locations currently covered by the long-standing trunked license.

Anyone have more information on this ?

A quick check of the frequencies did not indicate that any of them were currently active with a control channel within proximity to me.

This is only speculation. It seems there was mention sometime back here on RR of Charlotte-Meck adding a second TRS to separate public safety from other services. Maybe this is the beginning of that step.

Jeff -

Where have you found reference that this is specifically licsnsed to CMPD?
The only references I have seen are to Meckenburg county

This is VERY interesting news, though...

I believe that the City of Charlotte plans to overlay an ASTRO25 (9600 baud digital) system over their existing coverage area. This way they could offload traffic from the SZ4.1 system that they have today without having to buy all new radios at one time.

This new system would have the same coverage and capabilities, but would give them the additional (longer) life in the 800MHz world....it just takes them to the next level (esp. with APCO 25 interoperability).

I would bet that it would a couple/few years before you see something active.

W8EMX - Thank you for catching that ... I made an assumption that is not supported by the information available. Both Delta's and FireCops's comments / suggestions also make alot of sense for how the new system might be used.

I had a short conversation with a trooper this morning while he was checking some potential areas to set down a helicopter when Governor Easley visits Charlotte later this month for the dedication of a drug treatment center in the Dilworth area.

The trooper mentioned that troopers in the district would soon be receiving new 800 radios to replace their current handhelds.

My first reaction was that the new radios would be programmed so they could begin using the Viper sites, but he stated he wasn't aware of any plans to transition from the current NCHP dispatch talkgroups on the Charlotte system to similar talkgroups on the Viper system.
