• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Recently bought a G1 voice pager; so far, I’m excited, it’s very sturdy, not much bigger than a Minitor V, but the digital display and ability to program and scan more than a couple frequencies is awesome.

Had a few programming questions though:

First, what are the MDC settings? What is MDC? I’m usually pretty good with google, but can’t find anything on it.

Second, I was super excited about the voice prompts, but it looks like you can only apply them at the H - Receiving Portfolio level. So where my department has 2-Tone codes for fire and Rescue I wouldn’t be able to have the selector switch on A, but receive separate voice prompts depending on wether a fire or Rescue tone hits?

likewise, I wouldn’t be able to set up a silent scan with mutual aid departments, and cause it to voice prompt “Dept 1 stand by for tone” or “Dept 2 stand by for tone” so that I can monitor what’s happening around me, but not jump out of my skin when the tone goes off and it’s not for my department?

Third, OTA settings? Am I able to flash new programming or firmware to my pager over the air? How does that work?

MDC is like Caller ID for radios.

Oh, so our department doesn’t use those, but if we did, and I knew the ID numbers, I could program them in and the display would show not just the Alpha Tag of the frequency talking, but the specific radio too?

Yes - as long as the radio transmitted the MDC tone, which sounds like a SQUAWK.

That would be the alert tone setting. It can be changed in Tab F.

OTA is for the GSM Models but those have not been sold since before 2017 because they included a 2G module which is no longer supported.

I’ll play with it when I get home later, but I’ve got “Pleasing Tone 1” set on Tab F (configured to sound like the Minitor tone).

if I change it to Voice prompt, will I be able to set Pleasing Tone 1 somewhere else so that all 2-tones come through:

First “Voice Prompt” then “Pleasing Tone 1”
